Greeted warmly and very plesently by Jack, the landlord, who registered us, and showed us to our room which was spotless. Jack checked that we were happy with the condition of the room and explained how breakfast and the meal system operated.
The staff were at all times very curtious and attentive to our needs, customer service was excellent.
A good range of ales, we found the Three Tunns XXX and Butty Bach to be just to our liking and were even more supprised by how inexpensive the beers were, how do you do it Jack? It was easy to see why the White Horse is rated so high by CAMERA.
Walking and mountain biking all day works up a hunger as well as a thirst. The full English Breakfast was a big hearty affair to keep us going until the evening. The eveng meals were good honest pub grub filling, plentiful, well cooked and presented. Jack and the staff would come round and ask the diners if the meals were to there liking and if anything was amiss it would be put right straight away. Tables were cleared promptly and cleaned when the meals were finished, it was Joe Public that would not let the staff clear and clean the tables, before rushing to sit at the tables and then complain about about the state of them.
The pub is a traditional country working pub, with locals, farmers and tourists of all ages. On the Sunday evening Clun Cricket team, their opponents and supporters all came into the bar for post match drinks, it was great to see them in their cricket whites having a good time with lots of friendly banter.A distinguished chap who had a full walrus moustache was buying large jugs of ale for the team.
The pub is independently owned by Jack. the landlord and is one of the reasons why the beer prices are so reasonable.
There is a Beer Garden and smoking facilites at the back of the pub. I noticed that the pub calander shows live music, pub quizes (we came last) and darts matches.
Their is a secure lookup facility for mountain bikes at no extra cost.
If any one has complaints about this pub then they only need to talk to Jack or the staff and they will do their beat to resolve it. This is not the Ritz with flunkeys to do your every bidding, It is a good honest traditional pub with rooms and full range and social mix of customers, which might not be to everyones taste. I shall definately be back and I would recommend this pub to anyone

Sleeping and eating and socialising in the bar. We have always been made most welcome with a friendly and attentive staff excellent food so good that we have only eaten in the pub when we have stayed not bothering to try anywhere else locally. The accomodation is also first class and spotlessly clean. So the comments with no name, must have a personal gripe with the pub which is sad because it does not deserve it. We would recommend it to any one visiting the area."

Jack has done many things to the pub such as adding accommodation, adding a dining only area (which does sometimes make a meal out quieter), increasing the variety of beers and vastly improving the beer garden. In short, this is an excellent pub, both for locals and visitors alike, for real ales and ciders and the food is also excellent. I write this only because I read another report on the pub which I think perhaps a little unbalanced."

Unfortunately, in the last 2 years, I don't know the cause but the pub has gone seriously downhill. The beer range rarely changes anymore and I have seldom seen a guest ale in months now. The staff are barely old enough to drink and have little care for their customers. Gone are the days when the welcome was warm and friendly. The food is perhaps the worst sufferer of the decline, the prices having gone up and the standard having gone drastically down. I will not eat there any more and having made polite enquiries with lots of the locals, neither will they. It is a crying shame to see a pub go into such decline, maybe the owner has lost interest, I don't know, but if that's the case, please do the pub a favour and move on. As a previous reviewer said, the place is constantly full of children and pushchairs and is getting rowdier every time I visit. It also appears dirty and grubby compared to the way it once was. I will not go there anymore, not until I hear something drastic has changed. The Sun in Clun is a much better bet these days for good food and a friendly atmosphere. A real crying shame for this place."

It has the feeling of being past its best, but a traditional English pub through and through. Service is slack but the beer is good. The food is rather last century and gives no impression of being fresh rather than chilled. A food delivery van was outside when we arrived, so maybe the stuff is bought in. But if you are going to Clun, well worth popping in for the curious set of characters that entertain on a weekday afternoon and evening. I enjoyed it and maybe we expect far too much of our pubs. I'll be going back. "

If you're going to eat something, it's all good, but I would especially recommend trying the lamb. It's sourced locally (so you're suporting the local economy) and has a great fresh flavour. You won't be disappointed! As a smoker, there's a covered area out the back and there's a beer garden for the summer; it's all been well thought-out - even down to the seperate dining room for those just wanting something to eat and sit at a decent table instead of at the bar as you have to do in many pubs. I unfortunately missed one of the nights with a live band, but they apparently hold them quite often, so it would be worth visiting over a weekend, particularly as they have B&B rooms available. I'll be going again!"

One double pushchair took up two tables and we have to sit cramped in a corner. The beer was great but the food the greatest disappointment. The steak was bland but the horror was the chilly beef. Despite the pub’s claim to use “good quality fresh ingredients”, it was made from cooked beef, probably the leftovers from Sunday lunch. Throw in a few peppers and chilli powder and you get a really rather unpleasant chilli flavoured mess. Sunday’s leftovers for £8! No one had the courtesy to ask whether we enjoyed our meal, despite leaving most of it. We are certainly not going back!"
