Serving local beers from Heddon, Wallsend and Hexham, the staff are friendly & informative: "We havent had a fight in here since Montgomery was a corporal!" If you are in toon then the Crown Posada is a must. ..."

"For strangers to Newcastle, this can be difficult to find - best approach is probably to start from Newcastle Quayside, then walk downstream along the river for about 400 yds until you reach the Ouseburn stream. Opposite is The Tyne pub (see below) and if you look slightly uphill, you'll see the Freetrade.

"This is one of those small, compact, claustrophobic little pubs that I like so much. The beer is fairly inexpensive during the week, though it goes up over the weekend to near three and a half quid a pint. It is worth it. "First time in, early Sunday afternoon, not a bad place, food snacks on the counter, don't know if I agree with this, hygene and all that. All looked like locals apart from me, stuck to lager no real ales. There was a large screen showing football but you could only see half the screen, sun and all that. "My first visit and won't be my last, six real ales and what a place to visit part of the Fitzgerald chain of pubs, A large glass domed ceiling gives plenty of light and has several small cosy booths. It has won pub of the year last year and can understand why, right next to the Tyne Theatre. ..."

"Formerly located on that affectionate part of Newcastle known as "hippy green", this was a quaint little pub jam packed with long haired, scruffy student sorts. Then the chavs (yes, we had 'em as long ago as 1996...) started going in and bashing the scruffy types up, and so the management got sick and left. The pub has been bricked up ever since. ..."
