"My Husband and I visited Wansford last Saturday as we were attending a function in The Haycock in the evening.
Rather than have lunch in the Hotel which looked dull, expensive, and lacking in any atmosphere, we ventured over to The Paper Mills, which is opposite the hotel for lunch.
It is a beautiful pub with good ale ( which my husband enjoyed )and a nice selection of food and sandwiches, along with young, friendly and efficient staff. Our food was served quickly, and with a smile, and we both thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this homely village pub, although a bit on the expensive side inmy opinion.
Leaving the pub we were fascinated to see a group of people operating a speed camera from the furniture outside the pub. As regular pub goers, we had never seen this before, and found it rather interesting, but not the best location for such an operation. Made us wonder if they were also there to report drivers leaving the pub.
We must say however that our lunch was the highlight of the day as our evening in The Haycock was a disaster, and in fact we ended up going back to The Paper Mills for a drink in the evening. "

"After our last visit to the Paper Mills for a special occasion last week we thought everyone should know that we have steadly noticed a decline over this past year. While the food has had its ups and downs over the last few months the service and staff have had a few more downs then ups!
My family and I have noticed that the staff are not as "focused" on the job as they used to be a year ago, from forgetting things we asked for, to items on our bills (happened twice over the last 6months) or more interested in each other then the paying customers!
There seems to be a young management couple running the pub now and even though they seem to be doing something right as the place is still busy, they seem to be missing the "leadership" and the ability to keep "control" of staff when busy.
We used to use the Paper Mills quiet regularly, but now might start looking else where, which is a pity!
I hope this feedback is used positively and that the owners would get someone "mature" enough too help or show them how to gain control again before they loose control completely!

"Following on from my last visit my intention was to revisit and I duly achieved this. Positive:- what a change in customer hospitality top marks. I am very pleased to say that this visit ticked all the boxes and I have no reservation about recommending this establishment for hospitality, good food, and a fine selection of ales, combined with good service with a smile. Negative:- Price of cider a bit over the top!
Overall I look forward to returning in due course."

"Positive:- arrived without booking and was found a table without delay, did not have to wait long for waitress to bring menu, food was nice and met expectation. Nice and tidy establishment which seems popular, parking was available to the rear of the pub.
Negative:- not asked was everything ok with meal, when I asked for mustard to compliment meal this never arrived apparently forgotten!, Ordered ice cream which was wrong flavours to what I ordered. felt atmosphere with staff towards me fell short of a memorable experience. Paid bill and again lack of a thank you.
Overall I would consider returning as I feel estiblishment and management maybe too busy for non regulars on the night willing to give it another chance.

"As locals who uses this pub very regularly both for eating and drinking, we have only ever had great food and excellent service. The Manageress in particular is not just lovely but also always very efficient, as is the rest of the staff. It is however, never easy to deal with drunk, rude and obnoxious guests which is what the problem was with the person/persons who wrote the very negative comments below. So the fact that ang3289 are not planning to return can only be a good thing for all."

"I am a regular visitor to The Paper Mills and regularly eat in the restaurant. I have never had a bad meal in this warm and friendly pub. The bar and the restaurant staff are all highly professional as well as being friendly and helpfull.
The resturaunt manageress is particularly good at her job and is always bright, cheerfull and ensures all the staff are as well.
I find the comments made by Ang3289 very surprising, but can only assume that she was one of the people on the table who were extremelly rude to the staff to the point of being abusive.
Jolly good they won't be coming back again !!!"

"I totally disagree with the last comment regarding this pub. The food is constantly good and their Sunday Lunch is superb. The staff are always willing to help and are very polite. The last comment made claiming they wouldnt return, may have been made by the couple in the restaurant that night who were extremely abusive to the staff. Overall an excellent dining experience always."

"My first and last visit the food served was not at all good,we had a pie that was served up with a soggy bit of pastry on top and a watery meat that was more like soup, the manageress was extremely rude to the point of interrupting our conversation and accusing us of putting her staff down when in fact we were having nice banter between ourselves this was done in front of all the people in there how very embarrassing I am absolutely amazed that someone like that is in the position she is as I would not employ her and we even heard the staff commenting on the customers,I will not be going there again and would not recommend it to my friends "

"Popped into this pub for a light lunch before trying out a walk around Wansford last Saturday. A lovely welcoming atmosphere with a fire each end of the bar. There was a family celebration going on in the conservatory but the noise did not encrouch on the bar area. I had the goats cheese starter for my lunch and my husband had a blt - amazing! It was tempting to stay all afternoon but decided we should try out that walk. We looking forward toreturning later this month with our walking friends to have Sunday lunch after our walk. "

"Our comments reflect those of 21st March, a friendly cosy atmosphere with a feeling of being well looked after. There's an adequate range of good drinks, including Aspalls Cyder, and an imaginative menu, but not too many veggies!!. Dogs well catered for in bar area. We are happy to return to this pub frequently - despite cider tax hike!! The overall star rating needs reviewing."

"I couldn't believe the transformation within a couple of months. The refurbishment has been done sympathetically and to a high standard. The atmosphere was warm & welcoming and the food was superb. I can heartily recommend a visit, the selection of beers is very good and considering the location reasonably good value."

"We went on the opening night after the refurbishment and enjoyed our three course meal in the conservatory. It was a little cold perhaps the heating isn't sorted yet. Had a nice pint of Barnwell real ale to accompany my sirloin steak. Every table was taken and the bar was busy by 8.30pm, but it was the public opening night :-)
Good food quality and quantity but expect to pay £25 per head for 2-3 courses with one drink each.
Professional staff and looing good for the future after the extended summer absence."
