Wolverhampton Pubs : Newbridge pub in Wolverhampton
'I’ll never forget the first time I went to The Newbridge with my friend about two years ago. The total sum of our meal was £8. With drinks. And it was absolutely delicious.Pleased with my new and unbelievably reasonably find, I vowed to return very soon. But it was only this year, having moved around the corner, that I ventured back. Now I’m there so often there’s practically an imprint on my favourite seat. If it’s swift service you are after, The Newbridge is probably not for you. But if it’s cracking grub in a friendly atmosphere at rock bottom prices, it’s perfect. The pub’s unique selling point is its sumptious carvery, and depending on what time you go, the price drops from cheap to even cheaper. If you manage to order before 5pm between Monday and Friday it’s £3.50, and after that it’s £4.50. Sunday’s are most expensive at a measly £6.50, but for the monster meal you can have, that really is a snip. Inside is a traditional, no frills family pub. It’s still fairly sparkling since its recent refurbishment, and the seats and sofas are comfortable enough. The carvery is the diners’ main option, but there are vegetarian meals available and also a salmon fillet. A range of starters are also on the menu. There’s very often a queue at the serving hatch as guests wait with rumbling tummies. It reminds me of being in the line for school dinners, but with a guaranteed feast at the end. The chefs are friendly and there’s a choice of three meats, turkey, ham and beef. In the past I have found the beef a little dry but I think that’s just me being picky. The ham, on the other hand, is delicious. The turkey is succulent, and they are definitely not tight with the portions. Once you’ve got your meat, Yorkshire pudding and stuffing, it’s a free for all with the vegetables, usually cauliflower cheese, green beans, peas and carrots. Roast and new potatoes, and rich, thick gravy, finish off this lovely meal. If there’s any room left, there’s a range of desserts costing around £2.50. I recommend the profiteroles. '
