Bridport Pubs : The King Charles Tavern pub in Bridport
'As you step through the door of the King Charles you can feel the sense of decompression from the 21st century as the clock spins amiably backwards to a less pressured time. No one here is in a hurry, the term gastro-pub is an unheard of stomach disease of the future, swirly carpets are smart but practical and a re-fit is probably something to do with a Jane Fonda video. Consequently there's always time make sure the beer is well kept, the vegetables that accompany the vast, pre-cholesterol, portions of sunday roasts are properly boiled and there's more than enough time between customers on weekdays for the bar man to join in on a hand or two of crib. The King Charles is not rustic, rural or cool. It's not trendy, hip or suave. It's not really anything much other than an honest to goodness trad boozer, trying it's honest best and doing it rather well - which make's it just about unique in my experience and the perfect place for a comfort food, hangover-relieving, sunday lunch - long may it continue.'
