Colchester Pubs : The Clarence pub in Colchester
'Now the Purple Dog, trendy, newly decorated, eager to please staff. Standard range of drinks plus a coffee machine. Town centre so usual parking as available for shops. Real ale.....no idea. Food is best from the blackboard, it is a bit dearer but generally the chef appears to have chosen to cook that so you get better. Clientele from young to stop for a coffee to "bookcrossers" Beer terrace if you want it, smoking as the government permits, ie just enough for the revenue man. Historic building with evidence of such retained inside as well without being chenille wallpaper.... Worth a visit'

Layer-De-La-Haye Pubs : Fox pub in Layer-De-La-Haye near Colchester
'Friendly local pub where all ages mix, on my visit 18-70 age group. Customer service is friendly. Range of drinks good even including mulled wine. Great if you have a car or friend with a car, not the best for bus. Adnams real ale and a variey of wines. Has to be called traditional even if the young bar staff have trendy haircuts, has a beer garden and anyone is welcome to smoke outside. Beams and a fireplace and my mate Sonja is the interesting historical piece............. worth a visit, food is above average but be aware spicy does not mean"i have sprinkled a bit of pepper on top" Chocolate fudge cake excllent and a decent kleftico outside of a Greek (please can I have a rice option to go with that although new potatoes are good)'

Colchester Pubs : The Bull pub in Colchester
'Newly revamped pub tastefully done but retaining old character, customer service a bit flustered the night I went but they were working to a timescale (doors open for a show). Extensive range of wines and a knowledgeable barman, can't comment on beers but they did have a barista coffee machine, bring back cona and it's speed. excellent town centre location close to bus including a late night club special bus route. Real ales see previous review. Extremely good food but unless you eat competition quantites don't eat before you go. Lovely to see generous salads as standard instead of the usual uk lettuce leaf and tomato slice, well done guys....and a fish cake that tastes of fish! Bully's burgers really should be eaten with knife and fork, extreme food those ones. Couldn't say it's extremely trendy but equally no flat caps denying you use of their barstools. Beer garden with...........wait for it........pay as you go smoking area heater.......give them their due there are quite a few eco friendly bits about this pub goig as far as energy saving bulbs in the back barn (some of us notice, sadly) Entertainment is roughly as follows...........10ft tv screen with monday night classic film screening at current cost of £2 film £1 popcorn or £5 burger, music nights and comedy club ights in conjunction with Funny Farm Wivenhoe, get details and book in advance. Ultimately a pub I will return to especially for the food and the comedy was tops, but just a tad politically incorrect ;}'
