Yalding Pubs : The George pub in Yalding near Maidstone 'As a regular using the George in Yalding I take some exception to the comments made by earoles50 after his visit on 7th March 2008.
Mr earoles50 (surely spelt incorrectly) sadly has not told the entire truth concerning the events that took place on his visit. The publican Joe Morris was asked to open the pub from 11.00am that Sunday morning in order to allow runners in a race a facility to use the toilet should they needed to do so. Joe opened the doors, but not the bar, at that time. By 1150am several regulars were waiting in the smoking area by the car park for the pub to open properly. Joe was talking to them and was holding his dog by the collar and was preparing to let the dog off for a run in the garden area.
It was at this time, not the 1.00pm that Mr earoles50 stated, that several runners came into the car park. One of the runners, in a gayly coloured outfit, ran into the car park and neared Joe and the dog without appearing to stop. The dog, an ex police trained Alsatian, jumped up to defend Joe and bit the runner on the hand. The dog was quickly taken back under control and taken inside the building.
Joe apologised to the runner for his dog’s actions, but explained that the dog obviously considered the man to be threatening Joe and had naturally sprung to his defence. There was minimal damage to the runner and he was offered facilities in order to treat the small wound to his hand.
It was at this time that Mr earoles50 (still think this is a mis-print) arrived on the scene and proceeded to get stroppy with the landlord’s son Simon. Simon is quite a large chap, but he is not an aggressive character, nor is he a foul mouthed yob, but when somebody throws an unwarranted tantrum and accuses the landlord of what basically amounted to an assault, Simon will naturally defend his father.
Simon has recently been given an award for rescuing a shipwrecked canoeist from the adjacent river last year. The river was in flood and Simon took great risk to his own safety to save the man from drowning. Hardly an overweight, loudmouthed and aggressive lout.
Things did get rather heated, and the runners finally decided to continue on their run.
The dog is always under control and does not generally attack customers. It is a guard dog, but it is also a family pet.
The runners complained to the police who visited Joe and naturally took no further action. It appears that Mr earoles50 (definitely a mis-print) decided to take revenge for an imagined slight by writing a biased diatribe on a pub review website. Joe is far too dignified to respond to such nonsense, but I couldn’t stand back and let it be left unanswered.
I personally consider the George to be an excellently managed local pub that contributes greatly to the local community spirit by supporting local sports sides and holding regular fund raising evenings for local groups and charities. The landlord, his wife and family are exceedingly friendly and welcoming to all who use the pub. However, I would prefer to have the pool table back.
So if you want a nice pint in friendly and pleasant surroundings please feel free to visit the George at Yalding.' Report
