Caerleon Pubs : Ship Inn pub in Caerleon near Newport 'On arrival, it looked quite nice....very imposing building on the main road on the way into Caerleon, with plenty of parking. It's only a few hundred yards away from the main street in the village, so accessibility was good.
On arrival, the pub was very busy. It was 1.30 pm on a Friday, and lots of patroins were having lunch. It was a big bar, and it being so busy was a good sign, or so we thought. We checked in and were shown to our 'rooms'. Up a wrought iron stair case that proved quite hazardous later when both drunk and wet...and into the rooms. They were very cramped, with extremely uncomfortable beds. All small singles. We had rooms 1,2 & 3. The windows in 2&3 were very hard, if not impossible to close, and the room was very noisy almost all the time with passing traffic during the day, or people drunk walking by making noise. They say en-suite, but be warned. Its a shower built into the wall, a sink in the middle of the room, and a tiny loo inanother corner. It was clean however, if a little stale and musty.
We ate in the bar on Friday, and it was pretty ok. Nothing to write home about although my girlfriend did rave about the burger. Plenty of it served up at normal prices. There was a good selection of drinks at the bar, and a pool table, although for those of us who are of the more rotund variety, that was pretty tight. We drank a selection of Heineken, Carling and Magners Cider, all at just under £3 a pint. The main gripe I had with the bar was that it turned into a ghost town at night. We went back the first night at 11.00 and there was not one person there, and we had to beg for a drink, as the barman was closing up. Next night it was worse, my girlfriend and I were pretty tired and said we'd leave the lads and go back to the pub and have a quiet one before retiring. This brought a new meaning to quiet one, as at 10.15 on a Saturday night, there was nobody at all in the pub, and we had to again, beg for a drink!! At 10.15pm on a Saturday night!!
All in all, I won't be going back there, but if you want cheap and cheerful, then this is the place. It's the Ryanair of the pub industry. I'd certainly call in if I'm back for a bite to eat and a pint, but no more. Still, it more than served its purpose.
Breakfast was good the following morning. A full english of decent quality.' Report
Caerleon Pubs : The Red Lion pub in Caerleon near Newport 'I have had the pleasure of visiting Adrian in the Red Lion for a few years now, and all I can say is that it's the closest thing to a real Irish pub you'll find in South Wales.
Theres no need for long drawn out explanations; just visit the pub. Great host in Adrian, good drink available, and quite quickly too thanks to the great staff. This is a real rugby pub, with a great rugby atmosphere, and boy, what a sing-song!!
Ten out of ten for me!!' Report
