Lancaster Pubs : Fibber Mcgees pub in Lancaster 'This is a really great pub. The staff are always really helpful, friendly and just the sort to pick you up on a bad day. I often go here for lunch on my lunchbreak at work with a few friends. As a small group of women I find this pub very non-threatening and comforting to eat.
Over the last few years the quality (and quantity!!) of the food has been on the increase. They dont do fancy, but they do great homemade pies, chips and gravy. If you go for something lighter such as a sandwich or baguette they come with a really nice little side salad and always look yum. The best thing they do there (besides the huge portions of everything you know you shouldnt be eating!!) are the melt baguettes which are your choice of filling with melted cheese over the top....never been anywhere else that does them quite like this!!
Have been in on a weekend evening and it was very busy and definately not for those looking for a quiet drink and chat. If you fancy dancing around like a crazy person this is the place - young or old, everyone mixes and won't stare if your over 40! Decent mix of music too. Massive contrast to the calm atmosphere of a day time. Although Ive never been on a weeknight I have been told its much the same as during the day....pretty chilled and relaxed atmosphere.
The decor of this pub however makes it look a bit dingy and the toilets are very tired looking.
Having said this, this shouldnt put you off a trip here! This is not a pub for fine dining. This is a good old fashioned place where the chirpy welcoming atmosphere, that is sadly lacking from many pubs now, is well and truly alive. If your looking for good traditional pub grub which'll be served in lovely big portions, and a great atmosphere (mainly due to the lovely staff who alone make this pub worth going to) this is definately the one for you!' Lancaster Pubs : Hustle pub in Lancaster 'The music is pretty good but the toilets are really horrible and let the whole place down. They're swimming in water or worse that you literally have to paddle through and there are no locks on the doors.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Ruxtons Bar pub in Lancaster 'pretty much the roughest put in town...not nice people in here, always hear about fighting. not sure why they bothered to rename it the square...it hasnt made any difference to the customers!' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The Pub pub in Lancaster 'I really like this pub. The staff are really friendly, some of the customers leave a bit to be desired (by that I mean there are quite a lot of old blokes who look like they've hit the booze hard pretty much their whole life). But if you actually quite like pubs where theres an interesting mix of people who are non-judgemental then I suggest this place. Overall customers are great and bands are pretty good.
Only thing that i would ever suggest they change is maybe putting a darker colour on the walls of the side room with the pool table in it. Its very white at the moment! And doesnt quite fit in with the rest of the pub's atmosphere.
Overall great locals pub! Not pretentious like so many in lancaster now. ' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Yorkshire House pub in Lancaster 'Good music, glad theres somewhere that still has a genuine interest in decent live music in lancaster. However its not the most welcoing place to an 'outsider'. Theres a certain type of person who goes here...generally quite young looking gothy types or the other extreme the old rocker type. The older people here are very friendly generally, but the younger lot are fairly awful and make you feel pretty out of place. Obviously they are over 18, but they mostly act about 13. This applies to the staff also. Part of the reason I frequent decent rock pubs is because of the welcoming nature of them which unfortunately this pub lacks somewhat.
However I would persevere just because they do have some good bands on, and theres not much other choice in lancaster if its good live music your looking for.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The Varsity pub in Lancaster 'i dont think its unfair to expect staff to work over christmas in this business since it is one of their busiest times of the year and anyone choosing to work in a bar knows that! If your going to stop drinking here it should have more to do with the fact that the staff are miserable looking all year round, pretty rude, takes ages to get served, and if ordering food takes at least 45mins to come usually. Ok on very quiet nights as you actually stand a chance of getting a pint, but overall this place hasnt got much going for it. Just an average chain pub really. Not good, not bad. Oh and the toilets are a fair hike from the bar!
On a plus side...it is fairly clean!' Report
