Derby Pubs : Travellers Rest pub in Derby 'On the 20th November, my wife and I attended an 18th birthday celebration at the Travellers Rest. The booking was made with the landlords complete knowledge that it was to be an 18th Birthday party.
On arrival we were directed to the fuction room by two pleasant regulars and found a good sized room, just right for the occasion.
From this point forward it became very obvious that it was going to be a difficult evening! The three people behind the bar had extremely sour looks on their faces and their manner and attitude matched!
However all the guests were looking forward to a good evening and a good atmosphere filled the room. This clearly angered the staff as they soon became very rude and objectional to the young people - refusing to accept their ID cards and therefore not serving them.
As the evening progressed, the Landlady served a 22 year old man and only a few minutes later snatched the glass from his hand spilling the beer over his arm.The party's host intervened to try to calm the situation only to be threatened with violence!!
At this point the party was ABANDONDED and it was still only 9.15 pm
Now whilst we all understand the problems associated with under age drinking, none had taken place and surely a polite notice displayed on the bar at the beginning of the evening explaining the Landlord policy regarding serving young people would have prevented any problems arising OR DID MR THORNEWILL IN FACT DELIBERATELY SET OUT TO RUIN THE BIRTHDAY PARTY??????
As an observer of nearly 70 years I would strongly advise anyone wanting a pleasant outing to avoid the Travellers Rest at all costs!!!' Report
