This user has reviewed the following pubs:

Thompson Pubs : The Chequers Inn pub in Thompson near Thetford
'Don't be put off by the rather shabby exterior to this thatched-clad pub. I say pub, but like so many these days the layout caters more for diners than drinkers. This out-of-the-way place has been found by many people, 'cos the dining sections - smoking at one end non-smoking the other, with a small drinking bit in the middle - was stuffed full the Staurday evening we visited. VERY good food, with a wide menu, at a fairly respectable price - hence the score. Drinks range perhaps a bit limited.'
Report

Princetown Pubs : The Dartmoor Inn pub in Princetown near Yelverton
'We have stayed here 3 times in the last 5 years and have always found it to be very good value for money. The seems to be a management policy of not encouraging people to stay ie no advertising. But they wiull not put you off if you ask. Nice clean and tidy and very polite. They have an excellent range of oddball wines. We are going to renew our acquaintance with this pub again this Septemeber whilst down (from Cambridgeshire) for a couple of days orienteering - and letterboxing. It's been a year since our last visit (Sep 2002).'
Report

Baldock Pubs : The George IV pub in Baldock
'This is a Green King pub and is run to the usual high GK standards. There is a no-smoking area for those of us who dislike being choked. The food is generally of a high and varied standard.'
Report

Melchbourne Pubs : St John Arms pub in Melchbourne near Bedford
'A bit basic, but there's little else in the immediate vicinity - so when needs must................'

Bedford Pubs : The Anchor pub in Bedford
'Very good spread at lunchtimes at a very reasonable cost. Non-smoking area. Plenty of light airy space. Plenty of seating room.'
Report

Steppingley Pubs : The French Horn pub in Steppingley near Bedford
'Usually a very warming welcome in an olde worlde atmosphere. Plenty of eating space. Can be packed out at peak periods. Excellent if you get the place mostly to yourself. Food an snacks very good.'
Report

Clophill Pubs : The Stone Jug pub in Clophill near Bedford
'A very popular pub on a summer Sunday. Can be a bit difficult to squeeze in. Definitely not a place for those who don't like to be pickled in smoke, unless you can sit outside. Haven't tried the food, but they do serve.'
Report

Maulden Pubs : The White Hart pub in Maulden near Bedford
'Can get very packed at peak troughing times, but the food is execellent, the bars various including a snug, restaurant and bar meals kept separate. But non-smokers allowed bar meals in restaurant if needed. Olde worlde interior including restaurant extension. Well worth a visit.'
Report

Old Warden Pubs : The Hare & Hounds pub in Old Warden near Biggleswade
'Gets very busy Sunday lunchtimes.. Appears a favourite of the nearby agricultural college students. Two bars (back to back) several rooms, including 2 separate restaurant style rooms. Plenty of garden space when the weather is good. Food is perfectly OK with some special meals.'
Report

Takeley Pubs : The Green Man pub in Takeley near Bishops Stortford
'Usually quite a comfortable little pub. Best to avoid Sunday lunchtimes if you like space, a bit of quiet, and prompt service. Usually nibblies on the bar. Can't speak for the food, but it is served.'
Report

Birchanger Pubs : The Three Willows pub in Birchanger near Bishops Stortford
'A Green King pub, recently exttended with a sizable dining room. Obviously very popular. Has an excellent Shiraz. Well worth a visit, but book if you want to eat. No smoking in the ding room, but meals can be taken in the bar area.'
Report

Tingewick Pubs : Royal Oak pub in Tingewick near Buckingham
'Have you the right name for this pub? There is a Royal Oak at Finmere 1.5 miles west, which is quite a nice little place. Very welcoming, but food is a bit indifferent - adequate though.'
Report

Mildenhall Pubs : Half Moon pub in Mildenhall near Bury St Edmunds

'A fairly small pub but appears to be well liked - especially Sundays. Food adequate but nothing too special.'

'Very warm and welcoming midweek. Very good food at a very respectable price, especially midweek offers. Separate smoking/no-smoking dining rooms - excellent.'
Report

Hillington Pubs : The Ffolkes Arms Hotel pub in Hillington near Kings Lynn
'A very popular inn on the A148 en route Kings Lynn to Cromer, 5 miles out of KL. Excellent service, plentiful and widely varied grub, good drinking space, totally seperate smoking/no-smoking areas. Always worth a visit, despite it being very busy.'
Report

Elsworth Pubs : The Poacher pub in Elsworth near Cambridge
'A very homely atmosphere in a small pub. It was extremely popular before a landlord change (with a period of about a year being empty. Haven't tried the food since the change, but the atmosphere is still warm and friendly.'
Report

Milton Pubs : The Lion & Lamb pub in Milton near Cambridge
'This was a very nice pub before it changed hands about a year ago. However, now the food is very restricted and not available at all times - unlike before. Also there is no segregation between smokers and non-smokers. A BIG let-down on our last visit'
Report

Swavesey Pubs : The Trinity Foot pub in Swavesey near Cambridge
'This pub is far more popular for its food than its drinks. At peak times it is always stuffed full. Better book a table if you want to eat at such times.'
Report

Boxworth Pubs : The Golden Ball pub in Boxworth near Cambridge
'Excellent value, very welcoming, recently spruced up from an already good base. It now offers accomodation as well. If you ask nicely you can taste your choice of wine before buying - and still get a very full glass.'
Report

St Ives Pubs : The White Hart pub in St Ives near Huntingdon
'A homely enough atmosphere, but it welcomes smokers. So, if you don't like smoking, you'll have to avoid this place 'cos it's very small, with sealed windows, and it would appear no extractors. They do have quite a useful range of cheap food, but I can't speak for its quality - the flavour would be ruined by the cigarette smoke anyway.'
Report

Cockley Cley Pubs : Twenty Churchwardens pub in Cockley Cley near Swaffham
'Small but homely. Food plain but very good value. Avoid peak times if you want prompt service and the chance of a table.'
Report

Fen Drayton Pubs : Three Tuns pub in Fen Drayton near Cambridge
'Our last visit about 6 months ago (mid 2003) reinforced our view that this is still a clean comforatble and not expensive place to get good grub and a good pint etc. A Greene King pub to their usual high standard.'
Report

Hartford Pubs : The Barley Mow pub in Hartford near Huntingdon
'Food is cheap and plentiful even if not special. Welcoming, but subject to a smokey atmosphere if they haven't put the extractors on. You can normally get away from the worst of it if eating.'
Report

Lighthorne Pubs : The Antelope Inn pub in Lighthorne near Warwick
'An excellent pub. Try their cheesey chips, amongst all the other delectables - including the bar staff:-) It's worth going out of your way to visit - like 120 miles?'
Report

Marholm Pubs : The Fitzwilliam Arms pub in Marholm near Peterborough
'THis pub caters more for the eater than the drinker, but there is plenty of room for both. Excellent grub served up until 10 p.m. and a good variety. 90% of the eating/drinking area is a smoke free zone. Well worth a visit.'
Report

Warmington Pubs : The Red Lion pub in Warmington near Peterborough
'We've been here only the once because it's not on our beaten track. But we certainly intend to make the effort again if we're anywhere near. They offer nibblies on the bar, including a very nice bit of black pud - this was a Sunday. They also do cheesey chips, if you ask nicely. Very welcoming.'
Report

Henley-On-Thames Pubs : The Frog pub in Henley-On-Thames
'A busy little pub with an Irish slant. Guess why it's called THE FROG? It gets very busy on a Sunday, and is quite small - book if you want to eat. Can't vouch for the food as we didn't try it. But the plates of others looked heaped, healthy, and welcoming.'
Report

St Ives Pubs : The Black Bull pub in St Ives near Huntingdon
'This PUB is now an Indian Restaurant, a very good one, and has been for 3 to 4 years. You can get a drink from the bar, but don't expect a pub type atmosphere.'
Report

Fenstanton Pubs : King William Iv pub in Fenstanton near Huntingdon
'The 'King Bill' is the most popular pub in Fenstanton. It has recently changed hands so I'm not too sure about how good the food is now. If they've got the same chef it should be good. There is usually a gig on a Wednesday evening - bring your ear-plugs if it's not to your liking.'
Report

Offord Darcy Pubs : The Horseshoe Country Inn pub in Offord Darcy near St Neots
'This pub/inn has been extended and refurbished in the last year so the eating area is now at least double in size, which is good because it is a very popular place to eat. If you wish to try exotics like Crococdile, Ostrich or Roo, this is an ideal place to start. Prices aren't cheap, but nor are they exhorbitant. The range of food on offer is very good. Oh yes, there's nothing wrong with the drink either - a very good range of wines.'
Report

St Ives Pubs : The Old Ferryboat Inn pub in St Ives near Huntingdon
'This pub has been a favourite for years. A lovely location on the north bank of the River Ouse. Recently taken over by Olde English Inns - Greene King - it lives up to their high standards........ but it was recently fined for having dirty kitchens. A bit of a pity really, which added to the increase of the costs of the wide variety of the food on offer makes ne think twice about eating there. There's absolutely nothing wrong with their drinks or the comfortable environment though. Plenty of space in the garden/river bank on a good day.'
Report

Thornton Le Dale Pubs : The New Inn pub in Thornton Le Dale near Pickering
'Good cheap food in a very busy location. Yorkshire hospitality. Well worth a stop if you're anywhere near Thornton or Pickering.'
Report

Harome Pubs : Star Inn pub in Harome near York
'Although I haven't been here recently myself relatives tell me this is extremely highly rated and very popular for eating. If eating booking is a MUST - well in advance. Olde worlde atmosphere.'
Report

Hartford Pubs : The Barley Mow pub in Hartford near Huntingdon
'A fairly good range of food is fairly cheap and satisfying, and served promptly and courteously. Drink is not expensive either. This is an all-day opening pub so it can get very smokey, especially if the extractors haven't been turned on.'
Report

Dersingham Pubs : The Feathers Hotel pub in Dersingham near Kings Lynn
'This is one of our favourites after visiting the Sandringham Estate - just a mile away. Food is good, plentiful, and cheap. Gets busy at peak times. The decor is beginning to get a bit shabby compared with earlier visits over the last 10 years. Lovely log fires in winter.'
Report

Horseheath Pubs : The Old Red Lion pub in Horseheath near Cambridge
'An Olde Worlde pub taken over and expanded by Olde Englishe Inns (Green King) - incorporates a motel. Food good, inexpensive, promptly served with good grace and horseradish sauce (if you like it). A nice range of wines by the glass.'
Report

Cambridge Pubs : The Anchor pub in Cambridge
'A wonderful old 3-tier pub. Feeding times are tight but food is good, hot, and not too pricey. If you get in early you can get the place to yourself, in winter, but always crammed when the punts are afloat - Easter thro' autumn. There are no smoking areas.'
Report

Caxton Pubs : Cross Keys pub in Caxton near Cambridge
'Not one of the better Greene King pubs. Shabby and un-interesting'
Report

Horningsea Pubs : Plough & Fleece pub in Horningsea near Cambridge
'A basic olde pub which is popular with Cambridge locals. Being small it can get very cramped and smokey. Nothing wrong with the food either quantity, quality, or price.'
Report

Grantchester Pubs : The Red Lion pub in Grantchester near Cambridge
'A Green King pub which needs some money spent on it. Very shabby on last visit mid 2003. Nevertheless it is very popular, and is near to the riverside walk along the Cam/Granta. Food is satisfactory and plentiful if not exciting.'
Report

Stow-Cum-Quy Pubs : The Wheatsheaf pub in Stow-Cum-Quy near Cambridge
'A relatively modern pub which always seemed stuffed full on a Wednesday evening. Far too little drinking space given over to eating.'
Report

Fulbourn Pubs : The White Hart pub in Fulbourn near Cambridge
'If you want a 3-course lunchtime meal at 1000hrs in the morning it seems you can have it, probably breakfast at 1600 hrs also if you ask nicely. Very welcoming - nice and light and airy - jolly owner.'
Report

Milton Pubs : The White Horse pub in Milton near Cambridge
'Acres of drinking, eating, and parking space. Not too much of an atmosphere though.'
Report

Godmanchester Pubs : The Exhibition Inn pub in Godmanchester near Huntingdon
'The outside belies the inside. It's very nice and cosy with plenty of eating and drinking (and parking) space. There has to be because it's very popular locally.'
Report

Godmanchester Pubs : The Black Bull pub in Godmanchester near Huntingdon
'A bit tight for space all round when it's full, which it often is. Several interesting nooks and crannies inside. Food not expensive and varied enough, and promptly served (usually) - but it is popular which can cause delays both with seating and serving.'
Report

Harlton Pubs : The Hare & Hounds pub in Harlton near Cambridge
'A very welcoming landlord. Plenty of good cheap food, cheerfully served. Just a single, uninspiring, big-ish room for eating and drinking - but don't let this put you off.'
Report

Greenfield Pubs : Royal Oak pub in Greenfield near Holywell
'Very welcoming staff full of bonhomie (Welsh variety). Good cheap grub, and a very nice pint when you're thirsty - anytime really.'
Report

Wellow Pubs : Durham Ox pub in Wellow near Newark
'Good cheap food as you would expect in a mining area. Reasonable space for both eating and drinking, but it is very popular on a Suinday lunchtime. Pensioners ½ price mid-week.'
Report

Troutbeck Pubs : The Sportsmans Inn pub in Troutbeck near Penrith
'Very popular, very accommodating, staff go out of their way to help. Plenty of choice of both food and drink. Book a table if you wish to eat or you will almost certainly be disappointed. No smoking in the dining room, but you can eat in the smokey bar area.'
Report

Outgate Pubs : Outgate Inn pub in Outgate near Ambleside
'Quite a pleasant little pub, but not somewhere to go out of you way for.'
Report

Barngates Pubs : Drunken Duck Inn pub in Barngates near Ambleside
'Rather small and difficult to get a seat for either drinking or eating. Gets very smokey very quickly - even with the doors wide open - still popular though.'
Report

Ipswich Pubs : The Old Rep pub in Ipswich
'This place is a revelation for those who knew it as a theatre. Good, quick, cheap food, very busy at lunch-times. Be prepared to wait for a table.'
Report

Needingworth Pubs : The Pike & Eel pub in Needingworth near St Ives
'A very busy pub in summer with its marina customers and boating traffic plus road-borne visitors. The decor has seen better days, and the food is getting a bit expensive for what is on offer, but it's still worth a visit.'
Report

Godmanchester Pubs : The White Hart pub in Godmanchester near Huntingdon
'Much better as a restaurant than a pub. It is EXTEMELY popular locally for the grub it produces, which is served in a non-smoking segregated dining area with a small bar. However, the bar area itself, where you can eat, gets VERY smokey.'
Report

Cropton Pubs : New Inn pub in Cropton near Pickering
'This is a 2-level pub with several rooms for dining. The pub has its own brewery on site, and organises visits for those agile and interested enought to descend the awkward steps to the cellar. Food is good and inexpensive. Very popular at peak times, when it seves all those out walking/running/cycling in the forest areas.'
Report

Oldstead Pubs : The Black Swan pub in Oldstead near York
'Another 2-level Yorkshire pub, miles away from York - it's just under the white horse near Sutton Bank. The bar can get crowded on a busy day, but you can eat up or down, the bar itself is down. Chalets are attacched if you wish to night-stop, but these are not particularly cheap.'
Report

Stow-cum-Quy Pubs : Quy Mill Hotel pub in Stow-cum-Quy near Cambridge
'This is as much a pub as it is a hotel. The drinking areas are a selection of small rooms. You should be able to find a no-smoker if you want, but they are not designated. Food is served in all of these rooms. It is fairly cheap and quickly (usually) delivered. It's some way off the main road, the way you have to travel (otherwise 100 yards), but it's worth the effort.'
Report

Sproughton Pubs : The Beagle pub in Sproughton near Ipswich
'An excellent pub, good service, good grub (very reasonably priced) and a good variety of both food and drink. It is very popular, but the large amount of dining space normally allows you to finds a seat.'
Report

Henstridge Pubs : Virginia Ash pub in Henstridge near Templecombe
'This is a West Country Greene King pub and seems to be run to their usual high standards. We haven't eaten there yet so can't vouch for the food, but the choice seems good and varied and reasonably cheap. Plenty of people are obviously happy with this 'cos it can get very crowded. The range of wines satisfies us.'
Report

Stilton Pubs : The Bell Inn pub in Stilton near Peterborough
'This, to us, is more a pub than a hotel, but it excels at both - lying on the Old Great North Road (A1), long by-passed. A cosy, olde worlde, pub area with good food, not expensive, varied, and with a fairly secluded no-smoking area. You can buy Stilton cheese, for takeway, from across the bar, which is cheaper than in the shops, but not as cheap as buying from the makers. Stilton chees is NOT made in Stilton nor ever has been - try Leicestershire.'
Report

Guyhirn Pubs : The Oliver Twist pub in Guyhirn near Wisbech
'This used to be a very good pub, but a visit in Feb '04 left us thinking it's on its way down. Food is very expensive for what it is, and it's not all that brilliant either. Our 5 rating is probably a bit on the high side.'
Report

North Bovey Pubs : Ring Of Bells Inn pub in North Bovey near Newton Abbot
'A delightful little inn. Never seen it crowded yet, probably becasue the village is way off the beaten track. Food very reasonable, quality, quantity and price.'

'This is another of the 3 out of the 4 main Chagford pubs which is worth a visit. Probably our favourite.'
Report

West Lavington Pubs : The Royal Oak pub in West Lavington near Midhurst
'A super pub, when you catch it off-peak. Its food and drink are obviously popular, and sufficiently varied, and surprisingly inexpensive - for this part of the world.'
Report

Blackwater Pubs : Crown & Cushion pub in Blackwater near Camberley
'We prefer the medieval hall drinking area - large bar with good food - to the relatively small, and usually smokey, pub. Plenty of seating outside for a good day. Answer to jonsteed - don't go in in your uniform.'
Report

Great Linford Pubs : The Proud Perch pub in Great Linford near Milton Keynes
'This is always one of our favourites when passing this way. 4 goods bars within the main building - you can find at least one non-smoking one. Good cheap-ish food, served very quickly. Massive range of house wines - very well worth a visit for that alone.'
Report

Edinburgh Pubs : Cramond Brig Hotel pub in Edinburgh
'We always stop of here en route to north Scotland when routing via Edinburgh. It's very convenient when making for the Forth road bridge having come off the Edinburgh souther ring. The pub itself is clean, tidy and welcoming, the food being good, interesting, and fairly cheap.'
Report

Barton Bendish Pubs : The Spread Eagle pub in Barton Bendish near Kings Lynn
'We're not too sure when this pub is open. It was so busy on the Sunday lunchtime we visited that we didn't get a chance to query the sign on the door suggesting very limited opening times. Barton Bendish is really in the middle of nowhere, miles and miles away from Kings Lynn, on the southern side of RAF Marham (by a couple of miles. However, visits are very worth while, the food is vbery plentiful, with plates piled high with exotica, for a reasonable price. The landlord gives the impression he is very happy to see you, as are the ohter bar staff. Best to check opening hours before you travel out of your way to visit.'
Report

Lyndhurst Pubs : The Green Dragon pub in Lyndhurst
'Another great favourite. Wide variety of interesting food at a fair price, and promptly served with a smile. Very well worth a visit - avoid Sunday lunchtimes unless you like crowded spaces.'

'A fairly recently extended pub to include a large dining area. Good, cheap nosh in a smoke free zone.'
Report

Levington Pubs : The Ship Inn pub in Levington near Ipswich
'Extremely good value for money - March 2004. A good range of interesting dishes and drink (specifically wine). It's out of the way, yes, but well worth a visit.'
Report

Elsworth Pubs : The George & Dragon (elsworth) Ltd. pub in Elsworth near Cambridge
'For this part of the world fairly expensive - March '04. Stuffed full of gerryattricks on a Monday lunchtime - even at 12.30, and more so at 1300 hrs. Too expensive for what it has to offer, and hardly a pub any longer - more a restaurant. The Poacher, just down the road, is much better valaue for money - tho' closed on a Monday.'
Report

Edenham Pubs : Five Bells Inn pub in Edenham near Bourne
'A fairly homely little pub, with cheap, if not scintillating, food and menu. The bar staff (probably landlord's wife) didn't seem too aware of what wines are what, and from the fairly narrow range on offer.'
Report

Witham on the Hill Pubs : The Six Bells pub in Witham on the Hill near Bourne
'This is rather off the beaten track, for us, but we intend to visit again when the opportunity offers. One large bar/dining space, serviced with a nice roaring fire. Food inexpensive a nicely varied. Worth a visit.'
Report

Egmanton Pubs : Old Plough Inn pub in Egmanton near Newark
'Yet another out-of-the-way pub offering fairly cheap, good quality, but not very varied, fodder. But it's definitley comfortable and friendly enough to keep on visiting.'
Report

Levisham Pubs : The Horseshoe Inn pub in Levisham near Pickering
'It's the only inn for miles around on this edge of the moors, so it gets crammed full on a sunny summer's day. Food cheap, cheerful, and plentiful. Very tight for space when wet, plenty of overspill onto green when warm and sunny.'
Report

Chagford Pubs : The Three Crowns pub in Chagford near Newton Abbot
'A very good pub to visit whenever our other favourites in Chagford are full. Room to sit outside on the roadside when the weather favours.'
Report

Ireland Pubs : The Black Horse pub in Ireland near Shefford
'Very friendly family run pub with very good and interesting food. Price of drinks could be cheaper, in relation to this part of the world. But still we often visit. Yes, despite the question marks this pub is in Ireland - a village of about 8 houses (in Bedfordshire).'
Report

Somersham Pubs : The Black Bull pub in Somersham near Huntingdon
'Excellent, cheap and simple food. Non smoking dining area. Clean and cheerful presentation. March 2004'
Report

Ings Pubs : The Watermill Inn pub in Ings near Kendal
'Always extremely busy at peak times. Often a long wait for a table for the excellent, inexpensive, and varied food. Plenty of choice in drinks. Parking VERY tight - often way up the 'minor' road thro' the village.'
Report

Downham Market Pubs : The Hare Arms pub in Downham Market
'Very nice atmosphere, welcoming with very attractive bar staff (all female, of course), nice big wood-stoked fire when chilly. Less welcoming was one visitor - probably a local - who complained at me taking photos of him without his permission. The grape vine in the conservatory is already flowering (March 2004), and usually has plenty of good grapes later in the year.'
Report

Darlington Pubs : The George Hotel pub in Darlington
'This is always a very useful watering hole for us en route Cambridgeshire to Scotland via A1/Dere Street/A68. Food is cheap enough and the range of drinks is satisfying. The current owner is a bit temperamental and likes to foul the drinking/eating areas(several rooms) with smelly, pungent cigars. That apart we can't fault it.'
Report

Hambleton Pubs : The Finchs Arms pub in Hambleton near Oakham
'A very homely little pub where you're likely to be able to buy yourself a mulled wine, amongst other things, on Christmas day after you've peddled around Rutland Water. Not too sure of current food prices, but it used to be very good value.'
Report

Princetown Pubs : The Plume Of Feathers Inn pub in Princetown near Yelverton
'This pub is the centre of Dartmoor Letterboxing - with meets every couple o' weeks in season. It also has 3 stamps behind the bar - if you ask nicely. Always crammed to the gunnels with walkers, hikers, cyclists and Uncle Toms on a sunny summer's day. Plenty of overspill avbailable.'
Report

Cawdor Pubs : Cawdor Tavern pub in Cawdor near Nairn
'Excellent food, excellent wine, excellent service, and not very expensive. So because of all this tends to be very busy. Book or ring before you go to eat.'
Report

Postbridge Pubs : East Dart Hotel pub in Postbridge near Yelverton
'A fairly basic 'drinking parlour, but nevertheless extremely welcoming to the wet bedraggled, foot-weary, sweaty, smelly, hungry and thirsty Dartmoor walkers, ramblers, runners and letterboxers who frequent its sombre rooms at all times of year. Food is cheap and plentiful, and like the surroundings failry basic. Don't let any of this put you off - it's a very long walk to the next pub when you've got blisters.'
Report

Hawkshead Pubs : The Queens Head pub in Hawkshead near Ambleside
'Our first time back for a couple of years - Easter '04 - to find the place has had a minor makeover. This includes a hike in food prices to above the average for the area. We have to admit that the food is very good though, but they don't have an evening bar menu still expecting you to pay the same prices as the restaurant for much less comfort. Still the best in Hawkeshead tho'.'
Report

Hawkshead Pubs : The Kings Arms pub in Hawkshead near Ambleside
'We would vote this the number two pub in Hawkshead. The food prices are slightly cheaper than The Queen's, but we can't vouch for the quality. Like all the pubs in Hawkshead this gets very crowded in the holiday season.'
Report

Hawkshead Pubs : The Sun Inn pub in Hawkshead near Ambleside
'The Sun is probably just about on a par with the Kings Arms but with a slightly different character. Food being cheaper, and less varied, than The Queen's. Can get very smokey.'
Report

Hawkshead Pubs : The Red Lion pub in Hawkshead near Ambleside
'We would say that this is definitely the 'locals' pub in Hawkshead. Very smokey, and very shabby, and a bit limited on drinks choice. We weren't able to test the food, but didn't particularly wish to because of the smokey atmosphere. The cook had chicken pox so we weren't able to test his other skills. In view of the better choice elswhere we wouldn't bother with this one again.'
Report

Ulverston Pubs : Eagles Head pub in Ulverston
'Rob (and Rebecca) Bruce welcome you with open arms, not quite literally. Very eager for your custom, but we found the evening tables completely booked - Easter '04 - so we only savoured their sandwiches at lunchtime. Bearing in mind the isolated location the drinks range was fair if not extensive- we would have preferred a better choice of wines. We fully intend to visit again sometime - and check out the menu, which certainly looked interesting with mid range pricing.'
Report

East Clandon Pubs : Queens Head pub in East Clandon near Guildford
'There is still a sign outside this pub (Feb 2004) calling it The Queen's Head, under which guise I took the photograph a year or two ago. Very welcoming with a very good range of drinks, and not expensive food for the area it's in. Certainly worth a try if you're in, or passing, this area.'
Report

Eltisley Pubs : The Leeds Arms pub in Eltisley near St Neots
'Good and cheap, if unexciting, food. Drinks are fair and a satisfactory range. Gets very busy Sunday lunchtimes.'
Report

Dunblane Pubs : Bouzy Rouge at The Sherrifmuir Inn pub in Dunblane
'This pub/inn, in the middle of nowhere, within the range of the Ochil Hills, Perthshire, has been seriously updated, extended, and improved since the photo was taken. The interior and service is now (Aug 2003) exptremely smart and very welcoming. It is not cheap, but you may be prepared to pay for the excellent service and range of food and drink. The locals have obviously found it a good place to drink/eat and spend money. Booking for eating is really a MUST. And if you wish to stay don't just turn up and ask - they're well booked out.'
Report

Newark Pubs : Lord Ted pub in Newark
'This is a large modern pub with plenty of space both inside and out, close to a major road junction on the western side of Newark. A good large no-smoking area. Good, quick, cheap food, and good range of drink. Noisy families could be a problem at peak times.'
Report

Collyweston Pubs : Collyweston Slater pub in Collyweston near Stamford
'Very welcoming, good cheap food, good range of drink.'
Report

Aylburton Pubs : The Cross Inn pub in Aylburton near Lydney
'Very reasonable meal prices (for Southern England) May 2004; A varied range in a no-smoking room if you wish. A nice atmosphere in the drinking area. Worth going a few miles out of your way to visit.'
Report

Clearwell Pubs : Butchers Arms pub in Clearwell near Coleford
'As an eating establishment this pub is excellent, as a pub it is only average - and very small and crowded. I don't think too many people would want to visit just to drink. Booking ahead for food is really a MUST - especially at holidays or weekends. Smoking and non-smoking dining areas segregated.'
Report

Blakeney Pubs : The Cock Inn pub in Blakeney
'The inside of this pub belies the drab exterior and is really quite nice and welcoming. The food is priced fairly low for this part of the country and is reasonably varied. We didn't try it so can't comment on the quality and quantity.'
Report

St Ives Pubs : The Golden Lion pub in St Ives near Huntingdon
'The Golden Lion Hotel re-opened last November (2003)after a lengthy 6-month renovation. It really was suffering prior to the change of ownership. Now the bar and restaurant facilities are excellent with a good range of drinks and an interesting and varied menu. The prices are extremely competitive for a small Cambridgeshire Hotel. This establishment is now very well worth a visit.'

Sling Pubs : The Miners Arms pub in Sling near Coleford
'This pub in the Forest of Dean was a disaster just a year ago. Now after extensive renovation the restaurant area is extremely attractive, and the prices very reasonable. The bar area is still in the throes of renovation (May 2004) so we don't yet know how it's going to look when finished. We might be prepared to improve the rating when this happens. If you're hungry, and near Coleford, this pub is well worth a try. '
Report

Coleford Pubs : The Speech House pub in Coleford
'The 'Speche House' as it's spellt on the stonework above the main doorhas a history over several centuries. The two main dining rooms, both courts of a sort, could tell a few interesting tales. Although mainly a hotel The Speech House, lying almost in the very middle of the Forest of Dean, does have a bar facility which is quite small and not too welcoming in appearance, though this cannot be said of the staff. Bar meals are interesting, varied, and not at all expensive - for a hotel in this part of the world. If you get the chance, have a visit and eat in one of these old court rooms.'
Report

Lydney Pubs : The Cross pub in Lydney
'If as a non-smoker you can duck the smoke the bar is a very nice setting. Prices are very reasonable, and the food is fairly cheap with a good choice. There is a non-smokers dining room aside from the bar area. There are extensive gardens for eating/drinking outside in good weather.'
Report

Goodrich Pubs : The Inn on the Wye pub in Goodrich near Ross-On-Wye
'A long narrow drinking and eating area with cheap food and standard drink. The bulk of the eating area is non-smoking. In good weather there is an extensive veranda overlooking the Wye - and the road. Very welcoming staff. Accommodation also available.'
Report

Somersham Pubs : The Black Bull pub in Somersham near Huntingdon
'This is our preferred pub in the Cambridgeshire Somersham, there's another near Ipswich. As a pub it's light and airy, with attentive service, but can get smokey. Food is fairly cheap, varied, and usually good quality. However, on a recent visit there was something dire with the jacket potato which ruined that diner's meal. Overall, happy to revisit.'
Report

Great Langdale Pubs : Old Dungeon Ghyll pub in Great Langdale near Ambleside
'This is almost a 'spit and sawdust' pub. It caters to the outdoor enthusiast, climbers, walkers etc. Some of the customers can be reeking a bit after a day in the mountains. But being far from anywhere elese it provides a valuable and necessary service for cheap food and drink.'
Report

Ambleside Pubs : Britannia Inn pub in Ambleside
'As the photo shows this pub can get very busy on a hot sunny day. Food is cheap and cheerful, and pretty promptly served. You have to take pot luck with smokers around about you.'
Report

Skelwith Bridge Pubs : Talbooth Bar pub in Skelwith Bridge near Ambleside
'The bar itself is quite nice and light with a fair amount of room taken up with a lot of tables, for eating and/or drinling. Range of food is quite fair, as are prices - and promptly served. One minus point is lack of control of noisy children, allowed to run rampant through the bar without parental or bar staff control (one visit only).'
Report

Thringstone Pubs : The Bulls Head pub in Thringstone near Coalville
'This is a Brewer's Fayre pub which is bright, airy and clean. The food and drink are both widely varied and seem very good value for the money. It's well worth a visit if you're anywhere near and thirsty and/or hungry.'
Report

Wicken Pubs : Maids Head pub in Wicken near Ely
'Fairly cheap and cheerful food and drink, June 2004, with pretty waitresses. Limited choices of both, but no need to pass it by if hungry or thirsty.'
Report

Brampton Pubs : The Dragoon Inn pub in Brampton near Huntingdon
'Nothing exceptional about this pub, but the staff are welcoming, the food is reasonable, varied, average pricing for Cambridgeshire. The bar is a bit noisy even with normal talking, but more so with raucous partying.'
Report

Croydon Pubs : Queen Adelaide pub in Croydon near Royston
'Visiting in July 2004 this was some years from our previous vsit when we were impressed. Ownership has obviously changed. A nice environment is spoilt by very bad key staff attitude. We almost walked out. But the table serving staff are quite OK. The vegetarian food is grossly overpriced for what you get, other fare was expensive for the area, but a good choice. I don't think we'll be bothering with this pub again in the near future, there are plenty of others currently better and not too far away.'
Report

Wrestlingworth Pubs : The Chequers Inn pub in Wrestlingworth near Sandy
'A nice, clean, welcoming and small pub. Food limited to a roast on Sundays lunchtime, no veggie option other than roast minus meat. Our score would have been higher if there had been a reasonable menu.'
Report

Hemingford Abbots Pubs : The Axe & Compass pub in Hemingford Abbots near Huntingdon
'This olde worlde pub, one mile off the busy A14 three miles south of Huntingdon, (a very good place to visit when the A14 is at its usual daily standstill after a major accident) is now excellent value for money giving a wide and interesting range of varied food on its menu (including veggie) at a very reasonable price. There is plenty of garden space on a good day, plus eating/drinking area facing quiet village road. This placed was crammed at lunchtime on a Wednesday late July 2004. Drinks could be more varied, but storage space is at a premium. Prices quite fair.'
Report

Waterbeach Pubs : The Bridge Hotel pub in Waterbeach near Cambridge
'This is a recently renovated (by Chef and Brewer) pub. If you knew the 'old' pub you just have to visit to see the difference. Service, decor and layout are really excellent. It retains an olde worlde look on the inside and a smart garden beside the River Cam on the outside, with plenty of tables in and out. We have been several times obver the last two months (mid 2004) and found the place always very busy, but turnover of tables is high so it is easy to get a place. Prices of the excellent range of food and drink is very reasonable - especially for this area of the country. This is a strictly a NO SMOKING pub, both inside and out, so if you're that desperate then keep away. Also, if you allow your children to run around yelling and shouting you will not be welcome, so find another place.'
Report

Sinnington Pubs : Fox and Hounds Country Inn pub in Sinnington near Pickering
'Excellent service from the staff on a visit July 2004 with 2 90+ year old relatives. Service has always been good, over the last 7 or so years. A good range of interesting food at quite fair prices (I'm not a Yorkshireman, but prices seem to have risen to those more common in the southern counties). Very good value for money, and worth the very short drive off the Helmsley Pickering road if you're hungry or thirsty.'
Report

Holme Pubs : The Admiral Wells pub in Holme near Peterborough
'A large, bright conservatory area is the main eating room. There is usually plenty of space to drop in for food in this out-of-the-way village on the edge of just about the lowest point in Britain, Holme Fen, - (yes, minus) 6ft. There is a fair choice of good cheap-ish food, with a small, but satisfactory, range of drinks. A nice pub to visit if in the area, but probably not to go out of your way for.'
Report

Ely Pubs : Five Miles From Anywhere No Hurry Inn pub in Ely
'Unless you like a roast don't visit for food on a Sunday. Drinks are also fairly limited. But prices for both food and drink are reasonable. There is not a No Smoking area except for the dining room, where you cannot take refuge unless eating - bar snacks don't count. There is a very large garden beside the River Cam with plenty of tables, and moorings.'
Report

East Wallhouses Pubs : Robin Hood Inn pub in East Wallhouses near Newcastle Upon Tyne
'As a pub The Robin Hood, parked right beside the B6318 built on the Hadrian's Wall is just average. But if you go there to eat the large restaurant through the back of bar area is excellent, as is the service. The place opens out much like a Tardis. The range of food is varied and the prices very reasonable. A good range of wines whilst other drinks are about average. This is well worth a visit.'
Report

Heddon-On-The-Wall Pubs : Three Tuns Inn pub in Heddon-On-The-Wall near Newcastle Upon Tyne
'This pub was crammed with noisy chldren when we visited at about 3.30pm on a hot sunny day. It was also very smokey. Drinks were adequate, and food looked cheap, even though not sampled. This pub deserves to be better than a noisy, smokey, drinking hole, but that's the way we found it - July 2004.'
Report

Crosby-On-Eden Pubs : Stagg Inn pub in Crosby-On-Eden near Carlisle
'This is a wonderful Olde Worlde Inn on the A689 to the east of Carlisle. We caught them out at an oddball time in the mid morning on our Hadrian's Wall walk, so we're not sure of the awkward attitude we got was because of this. But they opened up for us for coffee and Guiness (not the same glass!). The food prices looked about average as were the drinks' prices - a good range of both. Very well worth a visit if passing close.'
Report

Glasson Pubs : Highland Laddie pub in Glasson near Wigton
'A funny little pub, sort of in the middle of nowhere. Glasson is a very small village. However, it was clean and tidy enough, and served a good drink at a cheap price. I suspect most of its summer trade comes from Hadrian's Wall walkers, but not too many would probably stop for its fairly cheap food (the end of the route beckons).'
Report

Walton Pubs : The Centurion Inn pub in Walton near Brampton
'Another pub in the middle of nowhere which services Hadrian's Wall walkers, probably the bulk of the summer trade. Food and drink were average prices, with a fairly narrow range of both. There's probably not too much custom in the winter months.'
Report

Swaffham Prior Pubs : The Red Lion pub in Swaffham Prior near Cambridge
'Good cheap food and drink, although a bit limited in range. But this is a very samll pub - with a large rear garden if the weather is good. Well worth a visit.'
Report

Reach Pubs : The Dyke's End pub in Reach near Cambridge
'A very limited range of drink and food, especially on a Sunday (Sunday roast and that's more or less it).'
Report

Patrick Brompton Pubs : The Green Tree pub in Patrick Brompton near Bedale
'Cheap food and drink in rather unexciting surroundings. But perfectly adequate if you're passing by.'
Report

Carperby Pubs : Wheatsheaf Hotel pub in Carperby near Leyburn
'A very good range of food for a small pub, drink range is adequate but not large. Prices about average. There is also a restaurant with separate menu to bar. No smoking in eating area, but it doesn't stop some. Rule isn't enforced, and smoking at the bar permeates throughout eating area.'
Report

Huntingdon Pubs : The Mill House pub in Huntingdon
'I've mixed feelings about this place. There was only one person dealing with drinks and food orders on the Friday I last went, and he was a bit grumpy. Quite a few customers were not prepared to wait for the slow, iffy service and left grumbling without ordering. Food and drinl prices are very fair and very varied. There are well divided smoking/no smoking areas - and a children's area. All inside areas a pretty clean. But the large outside area overlooking the marina was looking very scruffy and tired with rubbish and cigarette ends lying all over the place. The tables were also dirty and obviously not cleaned often enough. If looked after well enough with enough staff this place could be good. At the moment it's a big disappointment.'
Report

Sennybridge Pubs : The Lion Inn pub in Sennybridge near Brecon
'This place is small and pokey, and not a lot of good on a Monday when it's closed all day. Indeed, talk has it the owner only opens when he feels he wants to. There is a much better option (The Tanner's Arms0 just along the road.'
Report

Penycae Pubs : Gwyn Arms pub in Penycae near Swansea
'This is another pub which has been given over almost exclusively to the restaurant mentality. If you want just a bar snack you have to eat in the small 'drinking' (and smoking) area, otherwise you are expected to have a full meal - even at 2.00pm (August 2004). This is one of 4 pubs within about 1/2 mile and in the middle of nowjhere on the Swansea Brecon road. I can't speak of the other pubs, yet, but the ambience is OK at this one, until you get chased away by badly behave children whom no-one saw fit to control.'
Report

Whitney on Wye Pubs : The Rhydspence Inn pub in Whitney on Wye near Hereford
'A very cosy pub with lots of little nooks and crannies for eating or drinking at standard prices. A very good range of drinks and food. Well worth a minor detour, 200 yards, off the A438 just 3 miles north of Hay-on-Wye.'
Report

Gilsland Pubs : Samson Inn pub in Gilsland near Brampton
'A fairly basic pub, but very welcoming. The range of drinks is fair, but the range of food is quite small. However the prices are pretty cheap, and the food perfectly satisfying.'
Report

Trecastle Pubs : Castle Coaching Inn pub in Trecastle near Brecon
'A welcoming inn with a reasonable range of food and drink at standard prices for the area. A separate dining room offers a smoke free zone. Prices are the same in both restaurant and pub sides.'
Report

Storridge Pubs : New Inn pub in Storridge near Malvern
'A fairly basic pub, but very welcoming. They even tried to pay us for the drink we ordered - £6.00 change for a £5.00 note. Food and drink range not large, but portions (food) good and cheap.'
Report

Sennybridge Pubs : White House Inn pub in Sennybridge near Brecon
'Our score of 8 for this pub/hotel includes meal service. We were very pleased with service both at the bar and at the table. Prices are very competitive for this part of the world, and the lounge and dining areas are quite comfy. Regrettably no exclusive no smoking area apart from dining room.'
Report

Defynnog Pubs : Tanners Arms pub in Defynnog near Brecon
'A pretty basic pub made up for with cheap food and drink, and a cheery service. Don't expect too much of a choice in either food or drink, but both are acceptable.'
Report

Acomb Pubs : The Mariners Cottage Hotel pub in Acomb near Hexham
'Our score of 6 for this pub only reflects its fairly basic quality. However, the welcome is very genuine, the food fine and plentiful if not fantastic choice, which can also be said of the drink. We would be happy to visit again if in this part of the world - but it really is out of the way.'
Report

East Stour Pubs : The Crown Inn pub in East Stour near Gillingham
'As a drinking establishment this is quite small, and very smokey, but with a good games room. As an eating place, again it's small, but above average on choice and quality. We will be quite happy to visit again.'
Report

Buckhorn Weston Pubs : Stapleton Arms pub in Buckhorn Weston near Gillingham
'This is an extremely popular pub for eating - and drinking. If you want a meal at weekends or Friday evening, then it's best to book. Range of food and drink above average.'
Report

Chitterne Pubs : The Kings Head pub in Chitterne near Warminster
'Don't be put off by the looks of this place from the outside. But for agreeing to meet friends there we would not have gone in - it looks extremely dowdy. But we're very glad we did 'cos it is a good clean, fresh place to eat and drink. Prices are perhaps a little lower than average for this part of the world - then it is in the middle of nowhere - well Salisbury Plain actually.'
Report

Bowness on Solway Pubs : Kings Arms Inn pub in Bowness on Solway near Wigton
'The Kings Arms is a pretty basic pub which seems to cater more for Hadrian's Wall walkers than locals. Being at the end of the world - or Wall perhaps - I don't think it gets too many other visitors. However, as a bonus (pun! - Bowness - oh well!) food is cheap as is the drink, but choice is limited. Sevice is cheery as well.'
Report

Horringer Pubs : Six Bells pub in Horringer near Bury St Edmunds
'Just above average for this uninspiring pub, which has improved in its decor since a visit 2 years ago. There is a no smokers dining area, but the dominant area suffers quite badly. Range of food and drink is average as are prices, but service seems to be with the 'B' team. Maybe this was a bad day - October 2004.'
Report

Somersham Pubs : The Windmill pub in Somersham near Huntingdon
'My Rating should really be 7½, but it's not worth an 8 - yet. This place used to be a favourite several years ago until a change of lanlord who brought back smoking throughout. We didn't visit again for several years until last week (October 2004)to find there is non-smoking throughout apart from the tiny 'locals' bar (and games room). So this pub has become a favourite again. Having said that food and drinks prices are a little above average for this neck of the woods. But service is cheerful, and helpful, and female..............'
Report

Woodbridge Pubs : The Seal pub in Woodbridge
'Surprisingly this 'pub' is listed as a rstaurant in the Yellow Pages. However, it is at least as much a pub as 90% of the others we visit. Well segregated smoking/non-smoking areas. Food and drink is excellent with a very wide choice, prices are not extortionate - indeed average for Suffolk - and the area is capacious enough to fairly easily find a table despite the pub's popularity. However, parking is another affair, you may have to dump your car in a local side road at peak periods. Very well worth a visit if anywhere near Woodbridge.'
Report

Cambridge Pubs : The Hat & Feathers pub in Cambridge
'A perfectly acceptable little pub with prices a bit above the average, which seems strange when the pub seems designed for students. There is a small non-smoking area, which is a token gesture when the place gets smokey - the area is raised up from the surrounding smoking area. This pub is currently up for sale (Oct 2004) so things might change soon one way or another.'
Report

Crickhowell Pubs : The White Hart Inn pub in Crickhowell
'An excellent little pub, which is quite a bit bigger inside than the outside leads you to believe. The range of food is excellent, the drinks good for the size of the place, the welcoming warm and sincere, the service very good towards excellent, and the prices far from extortionate, indeed average for this bit of Wales. As we've only been the once - October 2004 - we're only prepared to give it a 9, but we're certainly intending to go there again. We weren't able to get a photo 'cos it was dark on our visit.'
