Lancaster Pubs : The Borough of Lancaster pub in Lancaster 'Used to be THE pub in Lancaster. Lovely location and building. Never quite understood why it went for the "cheap" end of the market, still it's a decent pub with plenty of room.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The Ring O Bells pub in Lancaster 'Classic pub with real fire and lovely decor. Attracts an older crowd but good for a quiet pint.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Blue Anchor pub in Lancaster '"Massive refurbishment" seems to be new lights, a nice lilac colour and newly covered seats. Should be a lot better, theme pubs look a little dated now.' Report

Lancaster Pubs : Penny Bank pub in Lancaster 'I dont like this pub much, mock antique fittings, poorly kept beer and too cheap food. Dingy.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Revolution pub in Lancaster 'Now one of the Revolution Vodka Bars. Massive improvement over the Alex which was looking distinctly awful in it's latter years. ' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Mint Cafe pub in Lancaster 'Not "trendy" at all, Sante and the new Sun Bar leave this place for dead in the style stakes. They do try hard though, with unusual beers, a nice atmosphere that attracts lots of people but doesn't appear to need doorstaff. Bit too close to the Litten Tree for it's own good !' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Park Hotel pub in Lancaster 'Good, popular Thwaites pub with a penchant for late night closing...' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The Friary pub in Lancaster 'The best student pub in Lancaster - fantastic conversion of a long derelict church, wonderful high wood lined ceilings and real presence. 80% students at all times, this place is well managed with plenty of staff and exceptionally clean.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The Brown Cow Inn pub in Lancaster 'This once great pub with real character has endured years of neglect - it's "under new management" poster is worn out with over use. Great potential but not being realised yet... Maybe this landlord will get it back to it's former glory. Thwaites pub, real fire, real ales etc etc' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The Bobbin pub in Lancaster 'No longer managed by the infamous "Jeremy" and much the worse for it. V loud music, well looked after beer, people in leather.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The White Cross pub in Lancaster '70's style purpose built pub. New owners are trying, but it needs a massive refurb. Great location, good ideas with food and drink but the Waterwitch does it 1000 times better.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The Lord Ashton pub in Lancaster 'Another unpretentious local's pub with lots of "characters" ready to chat your ear off. I like it though, friendly owner and homely atmosphere.pub with no ' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The Merchants pub in Lancaster 'Beautiful pub converted from old cellars used by Lancaster Castle in centuries past. That's the good news. The bad news is that they dont make use of their fantastic environment. For some reason this pub has gone down the "cheap" route, competing with Wetherspoons for the cheapest pints and spirits. Attracts a small and typical clientelle.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Ruxtons Bar pub in Lancaster 'A score of "3" was generous Dale !! The toughest man in the world works as a doorman here !' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Boot & Shoe Hotel pub in Lancaster 'Dull' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Bowling Green Hotel pub in Lancaster 'One more point than the Boot & Shoe because it has a bowling green, apart from that.... er... it shuts very late and you can park in Booths.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Fibber Mcgees pub in Lancaster 'Lanky's re-born' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Moorlands Hotel pub in Lancaster 'Should be 37 times better than it is - possibly even 38 times. Great location, super building, every possible advantage but is oh, so dull. Needs a major re-think.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Royal Hotel pub in Lancaster 'Not really a pub any longer - more a Thwaites pub in Benidorm, complete with Tapas and Spanish laminate floor. A Thwaites' local pub with a Spanish twist. Sounds great doesnt it !?' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The Duke Of Lancaster pub in Lancaster 'Desperately in need of a major re-furb - was accosted by a man sporting a splendid yellow rag hanging from his trousers - odd bar with odd characters, did stay open until 1am though !' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Yorkshire House pub in Lancaster 'Music pub frequented by lots of people who don't go anywhere else. Not the slightest bit of Yorkshire about it - apart from the general cheapness of the decor. Still, it has great charisma and is consistently busy.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The Sun Hotel & Bar pub in Lancaster 'Superb pub, wonderful transformation - a truly "quality boozer". Just needs to be a little bigger because this is now THE place to go in Lancaster.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The Three Mariners pub in Lancaster 'A bit average - my pint of beer was cloudy.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Metro pub in Lancaster 'Not eaten here yet but I have frequented the bar once or twice. Nice array of beers and cocktails, the music has become much more commercial as they attempt to broaden their appeal. However, it remains a bar years ahead of it's time and probably a little too ahead for Lancaster.' Report
Lancaster University Pubs : Furness Bar pub in Lancaster University near Lancaster 'Like all the universtity bars you have to deduct 3 points immediately due to the "style factor". This place might have wonderful beer, first class service and splendid clientelle - but it's still like having a party in a sheltered home. The university should spend a little money on their soul-less bars.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Stonewell Tavern pub in Lancaster 'A true Irish pub. 100% genuine with the beer shipped all the way from Blackburn. This is a Thwaites pub with Irish bunting...' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The Sun Hotel & Bar pub in Lancaster 'A total change from when I first reviewed this pub - it is now a big place, tons of seating space and a seemingly much bigger bar area. Quite lovely pub that always feels homely no matter how busy it gets. A place to spend an entire night.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Metro pub in Lancaster 'Change of management here earlier this year - very different place now. Food is absolutely amazing, absolute top class nosh and nowhere near as expensive as it used to be. Paid £53 for a meal for two (three courses) and a bottle of wine - would have paid £100 for something similar in Manchester. Top top place. Tip of the day - go on Friday cos Saturday is always completely packed.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The Three Mariners pub in Lancaster 'Huge improvement on the old "spit and sawdust" Mariners. The bar has moved, the place feels twice as big - only one major gripe - who chose the "clowns suit" carpets and seating fabric ??? Bad design mistake in an otherwise very nice bar.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Blue Anchor pub in Lancaster 'Been back again recently... quiet, never busy and in need of a good clean.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Stonewell Tavern pub in Lancaster 'About to become a "no smoking" pub - respect to the management for trying something different. Looking forward to trying it out.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Park Hotel pub in Lancaster 'The comments below are probably libelous - however, it's not a great pub and is best avoided.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Penny Bank pub in Lancaster 'I dont like this place - you can barely even see the outside of the pub due to the proliferation of "Fish & Chips - £3" signs stuck all over it. Absolutely brilliant location, slap bang in the middle of Lancaster... but such a wasted opportunity.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The John O Gaunt pub in Lancaster 'Still good - still busy - still cliquey.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The Green Ayre (Wetherspoon) pub in Lancaster 'Usual Wetherspoons fare - average beer kept in average condition, average food, below average clientelle, over lit airportlounge feel, lacking atmosphere, very very cheap.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The Lounge pub in Lancaster 'Busy bar - lots of promotions, tends to pick up after 11pm. Ok place.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The White Cross pub in Lancaster 'Needs a lot work still. Awful carpet, tired outside tables and chairs, decent beer. Not sure where this place is heading, basically it needs cash spending on it.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Walkabout pub in Lancaster 'This place is OK - nowhere near as bad as the comments below suggest. It's basically a big beer hall, lots of space, wooden floors and underage drinkers. Having said that it's much better than the Blob Shop, Blue Anchor, Last Orders etc etc' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The Keystones pub in Lancaster 'Re the comment below. I recently visited this bar and also "sweated like a nut" - swelteringly hot !' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The Bobbin pub in Lancaster 'I don't like it here. If the Simpson's ever do a gothic episode they could base it around this bar. It's a gothic stereotype - lots of men with heavy eye make-up, loud monotonal music and tons of black everywhere. Go put on your mother's makeup, wear a bin liner, avoid the sun, listen to Marilyn Manson and visit the Bobbin.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Royal Hotel pub in Lancaster 'A jumbled up pub of half thought out ideas and concepts. Tapas and a pint of Thwaites anyone ??' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The Brown Cow Inn pub in Lancaster 'I got an email from this website to say there was a new comment re this pub. I just HAD to reply. I visited the Brown Cow on Saturday and being frank it's a back street boozer in a high street location. It's absolutely bog standard - but with the unique selling point of having loud music. Don't take my word for it - give it a go and write your own comment on here !!' Report
Aldcliffe Lance Pubs : The Waterwitch pub in Aldcliffe Lance near Lancaster 'This is certainly a lovely pub. I think some of the comments below are valid it is a beautiful pub, it does get very VERY busy, it isnt cheap and it can take a couple of minutes to be served, but then I think back to a few years ago when it was cheap beer, nightly fights and no customers. I prefer this version... ' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Mint Cafe pub in Lancaster 'Mr Grind below is nearly correct re this place. Made the mistake of wandering in thinking it'd be a "concept bar", something small, owner managed and prepared to take risks. Er no... it's designed so you have to bumpngrind to get past people, any more than 7 people in the place and you're struggling to get past the bar area. Brilliant. The drinks are tame in comparison to many of the bars now in Lancaster - it's being squeezed in the beer dept by the Sun, marginalised in the cocktail dept by Sante and thoroughly trounced in the customers stakes by Last Orders.
Also - can someone tell me why it's called "Reds" ?? It looked to me to be full of young Conservatives when I visited. Is it ironic ?' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Boot & Shoe Hotel pub in Lancaster 'Visited recently - very busy pub in the summer with a lot of diners. The beer range is ok with a decent selection of real ales. Food's not bad either, though there are food pubs in Lancaster that put this place to shame (Waterwitch being the obvious one). Generally though this is a decent place with a village pub feel to it.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Litten Tree pub in Lancaster 'This place is in a state of flux. The plc owners are insolvent and looking to sell this pub chain asap. Must be difficult to find a direction for the venue in such dire times. Needs a re-think.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Stonewell Tavern pub in Lancaster 'No longer a no-smoking pub. Noble move in these health conscious times - but it's the wrong kind of pub to attract a non-smoking crowd. This is a rough and tumble, back street Irish boozer - smoking's a must.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Mint Cafe pub in Lancaster 'This place has had a refurb and it's much better - odd, little niche bar with a seemingly cliquey customer base. Nice enough though and much better than last orders or litten tree !' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The Ring O Bells pub in Lancaster 'This is very much a "work in progress". I worry a little about the design of the interior - bright and gauche does not always mix well with real ale and "traditional" customers. But we will see...' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Rileys pub in Lancaster 'Excellent place to play pool or snooker - well managed, clean and nicely designed. The bar area is the biggest letdown - could be a lovely, stylish bar with a nice array of beers and wines. Instead it's just the usual Litten Tree style offering and as a result has few customers.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The Sun Hotel & Bar pub in Lancaster 'Best pub in Lancaster - if you've bothered to read this website then you should bother to visit this pub. Classy, homely, warm and friendly. This is a connoisseurs pub.' Report
Aldcliffe Lance Pubs : The Waterwitch pub in Aldcliffe Lance near Lancaster 'On a hot, sunny day - is there a better pub to waste an afternoon than here ? ' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The White Cross pub in Lancaster 'The landlord bothered to write a thoughtful and constructive response to me after my criticisms below. Obviously heading in the right direction with that kind of attitude. Will visit again at some point soon.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The John O Gaunt pub in Lancaster 'Crikey this place has got expensive in recent months. Prices must have gone up 20% in 6 months.' Report
Lund Pubs : The Wellington Inn pub in Lund near Driffield 'Exceptionally classy pub with superbly kept three real ales and beautifully prepared food. I personally think the lunches are superior to the evening fare. Immaculately kept pub.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Bowling Green Hotel pub in Lancaster 'This isnt a good pub - in fact it's very poor. Have no idea what market it's trying to attract. This place is blasted out of the water by the Boot and Shoe located nearby.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Farmhouse Tavern pub in Lancaster 'Decent pub but dont bother with the food. Microwaved and tasteless - its not a venue for a real food lover.' Report
Manchester Pubs : Dukes 92 pub in Manchester 'Special pub/bar with a classy feel and superb cheese boards to complement the fine range of beers. Excellent pub.' Report
Manchester Pubs : Jacksons Wharf pub in Manchester 'Closed last time i visited. If it's re-opened be prepared for a vast church-style theme pub with a thousand nooks and crannies. Poorly conceived this is a big white elephant of a pub.' Report
Manchester Pubs : The Britons Protection pub in Manchester 'Nice, authentic 1950s style real ale palace. Let down by the cliquey staff and occasionally ropey quality of beer.' Report
Manchester Pubs : The Golden Lion pub in Manchester 'Run of the mill boozer with no discerning qualities other than two well kept pool tables.' Report
Manchester Pubs : The Lass o Gowrie pub in Manchester 'Would be a v good pub outside of Manchester. Unfortunately it's based in the City Centre and is one of many similar good real ale venues. Attracts a lot of BBC staff due to it's location.' Report
Manchester Pubs : The Moon Under Water pub in Manchester 'Was once the largest pub in Europe - now just standard Wetherspoons fare.' Report
Manchester Pubs : The Overdraught pub in Manchester 'Long established kids bard.' Report
Manchester Pubs : The Old Monkey pub in Manchester 'Classic bar with a choice of real ale or lager on draught and one or two options in spirits. Truly tiny bar with real atmosphere. Can't fit more than 30 people in.' Report
York Pubs : Golden Fleece pub in York 'Reasonably nice tourist pub. Decent beers but due to the prevalence of the aforesaid non-indigenous customer base you may have to wait a while for a table...' Report
York Pubs : Keystones (its A Scream) pub in York 'Exactly what you would expect. Not to be frequented if you're over 19 years of age. There are many many better pubs around than this.' Report
York Pubs : Mcmillan pub in York 'Is this a club or a pub ? Not for the discerning drinker, this is a classic young persons venue "enjoying" a prime position in the Micklegate run.' Report
York Pubs : Minster Inn pub in York 'Lovely little back street but classy boozer. Very old fashioned with three different lounge style drinking areas. Friendly locals and well kept beer. ' Report
York Pubs : The Kings Arms pub in York 'Nice to sit outside and enjoy a decent pint of Sam Smith's. However, nothing special inside and the food is very average.' Report
York Pubs : The Maltings pub in York 'A true York classic pub. Old and yet contemporary - this bar makes more money per square foot than any I know.' Report
York Pubs : The Roman Bath pub in York 'City centre pub that thanks God everyday for tourists. Would die a quick commercial death in any other city.' Report
York Pubs : The Tap & Spile pub in York 'Not bad but does lack atmosphere. Friendly staff, good beer range and plenty of space. This pub also has decent food.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : Penny Bank pub in Lancaster 'This place is just terrible. A derelict stump of a pub. Witness the way all the beer is turned off bar two - wierd regulars, temporary bar manager (is he drunk ?), dirty glasses. Step inside and despair. ' Report
Aldcliffe Lance Pubs : The Waterwitch pub in Aldcliffe Lance near Lancaster 'absolutely fantastic meal at the Waterwitch last night. Food was just wonderful, still the best in Lancaster and arguably the best in the North West. The menu's not pub food, it's top quality restaurant fodder with nothing like it in any pub I know. It's great to have a proper, quality meal with wine and good beer, and not feel that you have to dress in a suit or make a huge occasion of it. This is the place to come for a beer and end up making a proper night of it. Lancaster Brewery beer was a revelation too - makes me almost proud to be a Lancastrian. Top marks !!!' Report
Aldcliffe Lance Pubs : The Waterwitch pub in Aldcliffe Lance near Lancaster 'Ho ho ho ! What a funny comment below ! I eat at the Waterwitch every couple of weeks or so and I've seen the dog in question. It never goes anywhere near the kitchen but goes straight into the flat above the bar. Heavens - whatever next ?? And the chefs are, with only one exception, exactly the same ladies and gentleman as 2005, 2004 and 2003. I ate there last night and the food was just terrific. All in all it remains the king of Lancaster pubs and, if last night is anything to go by, still hugely popular !' Report
Winton Pubs : Bay Horse Inn pub in Winton near Kirkby Stephen 'Arrived here feeling dog rough and ended up leaving log a dog with two tails. Superb hostelry with fantastic steaks to stick your canines into and excellent beer (I tried the Pedigree, excellent !). Be careful of the low ceilings, I almost knocked my barnet a couple of times. ' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The Sun Hotel & Bar pub in Lancaster 'Overpriced ?? It's not cheap certainly but then the beer is superb and the lack of £1 a pint offers keeps the riff raff out. Pretentious - implies it's something that it isnt, it's a pub and a damn good one, can't think of what else it could be ? - maybe 50/50 will explain him/herself a little better. Overcrowded - odd thing to say ? How can it be popular when it's plainly overpriced and pretentious ??
I'm all for criticisms but just throwing simplistic insults at a bar is pointless. That said, I tried the Blonde on Thursday night and it was more tart than I remembered prior Christmas - more a blonde tart...' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The Pub pub in Lancaster 'Sat in the bar and waited for an eternity to be served. Ended up serving myself. The beer's somewhat stale and the atmosphere is best described as minimalist. Nice to have a bar completely by myself, though I would have been warmer and less dark if the electricity had been turned on. Still, for a pub that's been closed since 2004 and it's a damn site better than the Litten Tree.' Report
Lancaster Pubs : The Borough of Lancaster pub in Lancaster 'One of those - could do better - reviews for this pub. I know exactly what they're trying to do, the demographic they are trying to attract. BUT - it's just not right and I can't put my finger on it. Angryman launches his usual mixed up diatribe and has hit the nail on the head with some of the points. The "green" is too much - more thought should have been put into this because many of the bar's features are masked by being caked in this paint. The music simply isnt right - it's too specialist, not mainstream enough for their predominantly conservative target audience. The bar isn't too small but lacks the presence of a bar like the Sun Hotel or Three Mariners. Furthermore, the T-Bars clash horribly with the other stylistic elements of the bar. I agree again with A/Man with regards the leather chairs; they look great, in keeping with the pub's previous incarnation as a gentleman's club - but they're way too big. The actual drinking area in the pub isnt huge and they'd be better off maximising the space. I disagree with Angryman about the food - I enjoyed it - it's not over fussy, isn't attempting to be high brow - but it's solid, simple fare that will impress most. The big big plus however with this place is the cost factor. It's not expensive in the slightest - pints of beer are circa £2 and our meal for two cost about £30. It's cheap. Whether or not that will last, I dont know. But for now, it's a Lancaster bargain. They should contemplate doorstaff, however, as I had a little trouble with excessively drunk idiots that decided to have a pint prior to invading the Walkabout. Probably best to avoid the place at 11pm on Friday/Saturday night due to it's proximity to a couple of infamous late night venues. ' Report
Barrow-In-Furness Pubs : Circus Circus pub in Barrow-In-Furness 'on my tour of Barrow... came across Circus Circus and indeed quickly realised that is was run by clowns. Kiddies pub with 2-4-1 WKD and lager that tasted watery. Horrible.' Report
Barrow-In-Furness Pubs : Theatre Hotel pub in Barrow-In-Furness 'Like a straight man's interpretation of a gay bar - over styled and over bearing. This has had significant money spent on it but it still looks like the usual Barrow LCD screen bedecked pub. Lost opportunity. ' Report
Barrow-In-Furness Pubs : The Duke of Edinburgh Hotel pub in Barrow-In-Furness 'Very good - know the owners from their Lancaster ventures and this new venue is just as good. This bar would do well in a major city, for Barrow it's out of this world. Not a LCD screen, bottle of WKD or karaoke machine in sight. This is a lovely bar with panache and purpose - it sells 8 cask ales and a proliferation of bottled beers. Spent most of my Barrow trip here.' Report
