Leeds Pubs : Whitelocks pub in Leeds
'Like all good pubs in Leeds Whitelocks is up a narrow alley. Unlike most of the others it has been there for nearly 300 years. The long narrow bar is comfortable, if not cramped, but can get very crowded. In summer people sit out in Turks Head Yard which widens out so that tables can be put up. There is always an interesting selection of beers to be sampled & the food is cheap & quite palatable. All in all an excellent alternative to shopping!'

Report

Leeds Pubs : Streets Of Leeds pub in Leeds
'Last time I was on Street Lane this was a car showroom & garage. They have built a pub on thye site to cash in on the affluence of the area but this pub is absolutely dire. One draught ale on tap - Tetleys bitter - badly kept & tasting vinegary. TV screens everywhere. Stone flags in front of the bar with soft furnishings around the walls. Aaargh....'
Report

Kettlewell Pubs : The Raceshorses Hotel pub in Kettlewell near Skipton
'When you are in a village where there are 3 pubs and 50 houses you might expect the pubs to work hard at getting in customers. So it proved with our first visit to the Racehorses which is just over the bridge on the left as you go up Wharfedale. On a cold wet windy day the first thing that you notice when you enter the pub is that it is warm, very warm. This is largely due to 2 very nice open fires at opposite sides of the open bar. The second is the amazing carvings on the bar itself. When I finally looked over the bar there was draught Black Sheep and Taylors Landlord to complete the welcome. There is a very interesting food menu and rooms to let upstairs making this an ideal centre for hikers and drinkers from far away. We never got any further than the Raceshorses & will make a point of going back at the first opportunity.'
Report

Kirkby Lonsdale Pubs : The Red Dragon pub in Kirkby Lonsdale near Carnforth

'May the good Lord be praised. We found this pub on a Sunday & I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Brewing it's own beer ( they nearly all have Crimean names) - there were six on tap when we got there. I never got past the "Raglans Sleeve" but could have tried Sebastopol, Light Brigade, Crowning Glory or Forever Bury to name but 5. A spacious and welcoming pub which also has a decent dining room. I had roast beef followed by chocolate sponge & custard. The beef came with fiery horseradish & "Rags chips" which are tiny roast potatoes. A pub worthy of a trip or drop in if you are passing on the M66.'

'This is one crazy pub. Surrounded by excellent alehouses, during the day the signs exort you to wait patiently as all the food is cooked on the premises. At night you are assaulted by mid-range frequency sound at 120Db which is designed to repel beer drinkers. Only got halfway to the bar & had to turn round and leave. Currently the worst pub in Skipton.'

Mmm - low ceilings, wooden beams, 4 different hand drawn draught beers including Landlord, Flowers Deuchars & Black Sheep....sat down to sip our pints of Taylors when........LOUD MUSIC OBLITERATED ALL CONVERSATION & FORCED US TO LEG IT DOWN TO THE CURRY HOUSE.....aaaargh!'

'Another Wharfedale gem. The New Inn sells Daleside bitter, Daleside Blonde, Theakstons OP & Theakstons Black Bull, complemented by an extensive range of bottled Belgian beers. We visited Sunday lunchtime & were faced with a specials board which made your mouth water. The pub claims to be a mountain bike livery & there are plenty of bike lock stations. Service is polite & friendly & there is always local colour to make a visit entertaining.'

A sign especially welcoming Hikers. One of the first pubs in Leeds to have a designated family room. Sheltered beergarden & playground behind the carpark. St George Pubs : The Kinmel Arms pub in St George near Abergele
'Popular local in small quarry village off the A55. With draught beer & decent food you'd think this was a great pub but every time I go in there is a distinct lack of "pub atmosphere" For starters everything is very stark. The noise bounces off the hard surfaces & it is noisy - even in the dining room. More like a city centre bar than a village pub. Maybe I'm getting too critical in my old age.'
