Lewes Pubs : The Gardeners Arms pub in Lewes
'The number one choice for beer drinkers in Lewes. A cosy local in Cliffe High Street with an astonishing range of real ales mainly from micro breweries. They recently (late in 2004) celebrated their 1,000th different beer since April 2001! They always have at least one Harveys beer which is brewed a stone's throw away. Although they can serve you a simple ploughmans lunch or a locally made pork pie this isn't really a pub you visit for food. '

Purley Pubs : Foxley Hatch pub in Purley
'Quite possibly the only decent pub in Purley. Although having the dubious attributes of all Wetherspoons pubs, this is one of the smaller examples and all the better for it. '

Kingston Upon Thames Pubs : The Bricklayers Arms pub in Kingston Upon Thames
'Really quite a decent pub (if you ignore the collection of baseball caps on the walls - I kid you not). It is a bit pricey but the food is superb and comes in huge portions. Greene King IPA and Old Speckled Hen on the pumps. Seems to be a meeting place for AFC Wimbledon fans and the place was awash with blue replica shirts when I visited. Happily though, the green and white of Whyteleafe were victorious on that day!'

Surbiton Pubs : Red Lion Harvester pub in Surbiton
'As plasticky chain pubs go this isn't all that bad. The interior is stick-on olde worlde with lots of wood and ersatz antique stuff lying around. The food was OK and probably tastes much like the food served at any other Harvester - I had a hot sausage sandwich with an excessively sweet onion relish and chips. No real ale; just 'smooth' (headache-inducing) Greene King IPA but the staff were friendly. Pool tables always have the potential to attract riff raff in the evening but on a Saturday lunchtime it took our minds of the chemical beer and we played a local goth girl who was doing well to keep a young child under control. The pool table looks over a large car park so if you want to bring your family of little darlings it shouldn't be a problem.'

Kingswood Pubs : Kingswood Arms pub in Kingswood near Tadworth
'Over-priced pub in area populated by nouveau riche and a large insurance company HQ, and staffed by low cost backpackers from the Australia, NZ and South Africa. Food is good but pricey and the wide range of mundane beers which are kept adequately rather than well. The large interior is pleasantly old fashioned with numerous alcoves but will quickly get smoky. Much of the garden is on an annoying slope so don't be surprised if you lose your pint from the severely listing tables. The garden is a wasp magnet in the summer. '

Kenley Pubs : The Rose & Crown pub in Kenley
'This was been an abysmal place for years. A large roadside diner on the A22 where families were supposedly "REALLY" welcome and before that a Mr Q's. Now it's been boarded up and looks ripe for the ball and chain. Goodbye and good riddance.'

Ambleside Pubs : Britannia Inn pub in Ambleside
'I would visit the Lake District in the summer - let alone the Brit! This pub retains its authentic lakeland charm despite its popularity. In a word: unspoilt. Thank the Lord no one's come in and made this some kind of horrendous money-making machine pandering to dimwitted parents who drag their little children round the Beatrix Potter Experience. When I visit every November (for the last eleven years), the clientele is almost entirely made up of walkers and locals. The food's great but it's the place to go for a decent pint and Chris who runs the bar serves a decent pint. They now run a week-long beer festival of CAMRA champion beers. Only the ODG can rival it for beer in this part of the Lakes. Tip: get there when it's quiet late, eg. late afternoon, and keep your table for the evening. '

Ambleside Pubs : The Golden Rule Hotel pub in Ambleside
'Nothing beats beats it after a walk round the Fairfield Horseshoe on a wet day. Totally unpretentious pub with Robinsons (and Robinsons-brewed) Hartleys beer.'
Report

Whyteleafe Pubs : Whyteleafe Tavern pub in Whyteleafe
'Cheap furniture, ropey beer, lazy barstaff, casual violence. Anyone uneasy about the aforementioned and who wants a drink in Whyteleafe should go to the football club around the corner in Church Road.'
Report

Warlingham Pubs : Hare And Hounds pub in Warlingham
'The colourful and attractive exterior disguises a grimy and gloomy locals bar. The smell of stale fags, spilt lager and unwashed children do not add favourably to the pub's atmosphere. No real ale when I visited recently. '
Report

Elterwater Pubs : Wainwrights Inn pub in Elterwater near Ambleside
'Actually part of the Langdale Timeshare development which supplies much of its evening clientele. It's a converted hotel and much of the building to the rear is given over to timeshare apartments. Nonetheless, the slate interior, giant flagstones and rickety old furniture gives the pub, the only one in Chapel Stile, a feeling of timeless authenticity. Most customers are there for food and I'd always recommend the shoulder of lamb - whether it comes from the fells above Langdale or shipped over from New Zealand (as one prosaic customer once suggested). Jennings supply most of the beer and there's normally a local based guest. I normally plump for the Jennings Snecklifter (over the somewhat bland Bitter and Cumberland Ale). Get there early evening before the tourists start jostling for tables.'

Sutton Pubs : The Butterchurn pub in Sutton
'Known locally as the Stomach Churn. With good reason.'
Report

Horsham Pubs : Ye Old Stout House pub in Horsham
'Town centre pub facing a pedestrianised shopping area. It's cozy, welcoming and the staff are friendly. Supporters of the local football club often meet up there on matchdays giving the place an extra buzz on Saturday lunchtimes. Now a Hall & Woodhouse (Badger Beer) house, you will get the usual Badger Beer range including Tanglefoot. In addition you can have (the now absurdly misnomered) King & Barnes Sussex Bitter - which is brewed in Blandford Forum, Dorset.'

Fleet Pubs : Oatsheaf Hotel pub in Fleet
'Part of Mitchell & Butler's Ember Inns chain i.e. smart, modern interiors with an emphasis on food. This is a spacious open plan pub sitting on a roundabout at the south end of Fleet's High Street. It doesn't really have a very pubby atmosphere, the furniture and décor is all very modern (and thus prone to dating!) with lots of settees and low hung armchairs. The clientele seemed quite well-to-do but despite four of our five strong party wearing football shirts (Whyteleafe FC) we weren't made to feel at all unwelcome. The food and service, ubiquitously uniformed barmaids, were pretty good and the Deuchars IPA was excellent. A short stroll to Fleet Town FC and it's worth stopping off at the Oatsheaf before heading for Fleet Town's ice cold Boddingtons froth-fest. '
