Ironbridge Pubs : The Golden Ball Inn pub in Ironbridge near Telford
'Great Real Ale pub, nice meals. Always 5 real ales on, well kept and well presented. Only critisism would be that they all tend to be mid strength beers and too many local brews (tend to be a bit samey and home-brewish) would suggest more classic beers Adnams (Broadside & Explorer), Green King (Abbot & Speckled Hen), Theakston (esp Old Peculier)& Black Sheep and just a couple of local ones. However the Everards Tiger is an excellent pint. Would recommend'

'A Bathams pub in the middle of North Wales! miles from anywhere on the A5 on the way from Llangollen to Bangor, Anglesea etc. Fantastic Real Ale in a lovely location, caravan and campsite and a fishing pond. Also food available (but I've not tried it, yet) Bathams Bitter and Mild on handpull. Well worth stopping to break-up any journey. I'll plan all future trips with a break for a pint here. Watch out for the signs by the road as you approach. Not to be missed. http://www.giler.co.uk/'

Very nice baguettes.'

'Very nice restaurant but I agree not a pub. Very minimalist bar fitings. How are you supposed to know what they have on draught if all the pumps are the same with no signage? Only bitter was KEG Boddingtons. Do people not realise that a choice of a quality real ale with a meal is as important as their wine list ? Nice food and service... SORT OUT THE BEER !'

Harborne Pubs : Old House At Home pub in Harborne near Birmingham
'Another "Pub" with No BEER ! - Three hand-pulls only one with visible pump clip showing Marston’s Pedigree, fair enough you'll settle for a pint of that.. Wrong ! "not got any, forgot to order it!" was the excuse so you'll have to settle for the only other option keg smooth-flow Tetley’s. Oh and non of the new flavour J20 even though its advertised throughout the pub... what else have they "forgotten". You can have a (Quality?) bottle of wine from the wine list, but you can’t have a quality beer with your meal. When will people realise, real ale is the new wine! A typical “cram them in, feed them up, 2 for 1, chuck ‘em out, plastic pub” '

Longdon Pubs : The Swan With Two Necks pub in Longdon near Rugeley
'Good to see the "Cask Marque" message is getting heard. Had seen this pub had been acredited with it recently so had to check it out!.. Had two very nice pints of Adnams & Burton Bridge Stairway to Heaven. Shame I couldn't stop for the TT Landlord and Duechers IPA (next time!) - very good, well presented quality beer. It's good to see a pub with a good selection of classic beers rather than the poor quality micro-brewery beers that are becoming so wide-spread these days.'

Kemberton Pubs : Mason Arms pub in Kemberton near Shifnal
'Fantastic Food, Great Real Ale. A Top Class pub. Good selection of 3 changing real ales with notification of what's coming next. Very good pints of Old Speck. 'Fantastic proper Pub selling a great selection of good real ales. Very impressive list, well visible and informative in both bar areas so you can choose what you want without having to run around the bar to see what is on offer, as good touch. 8 or 9 ales on sale on Saturday night with a good mixture of classics like Abbot and Summer Lightning as well as lesser know micro and local brews, a very good balance. A must visit pub for any decerning drinker'

Harborne Pubs : The Junction pub in Harborne near Birmingham
'The Junction Inn. Nice pub with good smoking area out of the back. I bit pretentious with all the foreign lagers (who drinks that stuff?!) Three real ales on but no classics all very micro brewish but not a bad pint. Staff need some customer service training, our drinks were served a various places down the bar and had to be retrieved ourselves and then to have the audacity to ask to have my beer topped up. She was not a happy soul !'

Smethwick Pubs : The Cock & Magpie pub in Smethwick
'Harvester Restraunt nice food but its all Keg Beer - I like a nice Real Ale with my food not a freezing cold keg pedigree that has no taste to it. Didn't even bother with a second pint.... and I'm not sure how this comes under Smethwick as its 1/2 way between Harborne and Bearwood !? Still even the Harvester Web Site has it in the wrong location and incorrect postcode!'

Church Aston Pubs : The Last Inn pub in Church Aston near Newport
'This has got to be one of the best all round pubs in the area. Cask Marque accredited so you know you are going to get a good pint. 7 changing real ales available, yes seven, with the likes of 6X, Adnams, Everards Tiger, Abbot, Timothy Taylor Landlord, etc. and Salopian Gold to satisfy those that crave local brews. A very well presented drinking area at the front of the Pub, a very nice dining room / conservatory with good quality, reasonably priced meals. A well covered outside area (not just for smokers!) and the best pub garden I’ve seen anywhere, with raised flower beds, waterfall and plenty of outside tables, idyllic place for a sunny afternoon. Cannot fault the place….wished I lived closer !'

'Lovely "country" style pub in heart of Birmingham. Quirky bar under the stairs, Queue at the bar in the corridor. Strange shape bowling green outside usually a very vocal match going on! Very nice, reasonably priced food. Usually 2 good real ales on and has Cask Marque. Had 4 very nice pints of "Duchy Organinc Ale" last night from Prince Charles's Estate - very nice, good to see he's doing something useful !!'

Bridlington Pubs : Prior John pub in Bridlington
'The JDW experience is always the same wherever you go! Good Quality Real Ales (Cask Marque so it has to be) Basic but cheep food. But where do they get the staff from? Is there a special school at JDW where they go to have the spirit knocked out of them, never smile and everything by the book. I had a Sunday meal deal which includes a drink, the real ale option is Marstons Pedigree, but they've just run out. It does say another "Ale" will be offered. My offer when pushed was "John Smiths Smooth" thats not Ale its crap keg! Its like offering cider drinkers a larger! I wanted a pint of Theakston XB (4.5%) same as Pedigree, "can't have that", I offered to pay the difference, "can't do that". In the end I bought the XB seperate and paid full price (only £1.79 but thats not the point!) Having said all that the XB was OK and the rest of the selection was very good including Abbot, Green King IPA and Old Peculier. Meal was nothing special but it filled a hole, and as previous contibuter says the Yorkshie Pudding was naff - typical bought in rubbish. Sort your staff out JDW'

Hopwas Pubs : The Tame Otter pub in Hopwas near Tamworth
'NO BEER ! – no cask ale available, delivery problem apparently, lame excuse! Keg Pedegree and Keg Speckled Hen that wasn’t just crap keg it was nasty! With hindsight I should have had a glass of wine or even a glass of water! Too be fair the food was very nice (but bought in) but had to leave to go back across the canal to the Red Lion for a decent pint of Cask Ale to take the taste away. Would not recommend unless you like girly drinks or have no taste buds.'

Stafford Pubs : The Wolseley Arms pub in Stafford
'Another big pub chain faceless pub. Reasonable pint of Bass bitter, the only Cask Ale available (had keg pedigree and speckled hen – but I’d rather drink my own urine) Reasonable food, but the Pie crust was like leather and the 12oz steak had 5oz of fat – trim your meat chef! But there again mass produced food cooked by robots not creative chefs. Don’t go out of your way to visit.'

Penkridge Pubs : The Boat Inn pub in Penkridge near Stafford
'What a let down. Went in and ordered a pint of Robinsons. The only real ale available despite other hand pulls. The barmaid pulled half and announced that it had “gone” and could only offer John Smiths Smooth as an alternative, suffice to say we put our money away and walked out. How do you run out of beer, who manages the stock and when will they be sacked? You own/manage a pub in a lovely setting on the banks of the canal and you can’t even get the basics right. When you stock real ale you always have one on and one waiting, its basic cellarmanship. If you can’t run a pub properly then don’t and get out.'

Wolverhampton Pubs : Moon Under Water pub in Wolverhampton

The Tuesday grill night (including free drink) choice of drink is Pedigree but its just “gone” so the alternative ale is….. “any thing you would like from our range sir!” including, Green King IPA, Abbot, & Enville. Very nice pint of GK IPA and an Enville just cos it’s a nice place. Nice cheap food, including the salad. Well done JDW Wolverhampton restoring my faith.'

Also Adnams Bitter, Bombardier, London Pride & Green King IPA. But what was the Soap Opera happening behind the bar? It seamed the Gaffer, his son? two female bar staff and one male bar staff were having one “hum-dinger” of a row. No-one was concentrating on serving customers and one of the bar staff ended in tears all very unprofessional but avid watching!'

Tried it again same evening, very cloudy so I took it back and they pulled another, still a little cloudy but drinkable, managed 5 pints of it OK plus one of Brew XI which was also very average and cloudy. I would appear the beer lines could do with a good clean or employ a good cellar man! Having said that the food was very nice (apart from the lettuce which was well past its best) the Steak and the Lamb Loin were very nice… just a shame about the beer'

My partner ordered a Brandy & Lemonade, "sorry can't find any brandy!" so she'll have a Vodka & Lemonade, Lemonade was flat, OK she'll have a glass of Red Wine, "this one ok" said the barman pointing to the Stowells chiller containig 2 white, 1 rose and 1 red. It was as cloudy as pea soup and tasted of vinigar. A second one was poured, Just as bad, the bar staff didn't know if it was an old or new barrel on! Eventually had to have a pint of very average Pedigree the only other choice was Brew XI (advertised as Brew XII !) as the only other offering was Brains SA Gold which was on view but marked as "comming soon". Since the pubco take-over the landlords have lost interest, the kitchen closes early, the pub closes early, even get kicked out at 10pm, thats if you are there early enough to get in. The landlords attitude is "I'm the licensee I'll close when I want" - not for much longer mate! A great lesson in how to bring a pub to its knees. 'Having visited and enjoyed this pub many times before I can safely say that it has gone down hill rapidly. I presume as a result of the T&W poorly thought out "scores on the doors" scheme that its popularity has dropped off - well done T&W council for helping to destroy the pub trade! Last night (Saturday) there were only 3 real ales on (instead of the prviously usual 7) The number of diners were few and far between, the place used to be packed. The food is still 2 for 1 on everything so is good value for money but.... I had a mixed grill and the liver was almost raw and dripping blood, the rest of the meat was OK but undercooked liver is a health risk if nothing else! My partners "Surf & Turf" was advestised as "Steak abd Wholetail Scampi" is was obviously straight from the freezer bag with no sign of a "tail" insight. We received an appology for the liver paid our bill and left. My intension for the evening was to report favourably that the recent critism was unfounded and that this was still a great place to eat and drink.... Sorry I can't do that!'

'Recent change of management…and it shows! This was always one of my top 2 eating pubs in Telford, unfortunately no more. Although the cask ale continues to be good especially the Springback Brewery Ginger Pig the food and service led a lot to be desired. The menu has been simplified – no more pigeon, quail or octopus probably down to the skills of the new chef? While we were there last night at least 2 meals from separate parties were sent back for being undercooked. Kidneys that were described as a “train smash” oozing blood and a Venison steak in Béarnaise sauce that was stone cold and so raw in the middle it was still chilled. The venison was rescued by being cooked and was very nice but it was the attitude of the waitress that left a worst taste in the mouth. “that’s how its supposed to be, have you ever had venison before?” was her very vocal and demeaning question to the lady diner who had dared to point out it wasn’t cooked. Perhaps she was trained in customer service in a transport café? Perhaps these are teething problems for the new owner but I think they should have a serious word with the chef and staff. Unfortunately I won’t be visiting again in the near future to find out; I’ll take my custom elsewhere!'

'Fair play to this place... It was a bit of a dive a few years ago but I have just had a very nice steak christmas meal and can't fault it. Now that they have made the effort and got cask ale in it is well worth a visit. Being a Greene King house it has the usual IPA on the new font, Speckled Hen and also had the new Abbot Reserve 6.5% on. Not sure I'd hold a wedding reception here though (there was one going on while we ate on a Saturday afternoon!).'

'Well this place may be an "attitude free" place but it is also a "quality beer free" venue. Had to suffer "Lazy Landlord Bitter" last night (John Smiths Keg!) I'm sure even the "attitude friendly" clientel would appreciate a quality cask ale offering regardless of their sexuality! Nice enough place with no trouble on a Saturday night for "Straight", "Gay", "Bi", whatever alike...but sort out the beer!'

'Bit of a run down place, no cask ales and strange choice of "Lazy Landlord Bitter & Mild" Mansfield smooth..v.strange choice of smooth fizz! Great band on last Saturday night. "Paul Parker and all the Right Friends" shame they were only playing to a very select lucky few. The notices arround the place sugget Karaoke on Fridays and live bands on Saturdays. Only worth the visit for the band.'

Aston Pubs : The Bartons Arms pub in Aston near Birmingham
'What an amazing place! Tiled walls, archways, mosaics and screens very impressive olde worlde decor. Crystal clear cask ales from Oakham Brewery, the Bishops Farewell and Inferno were exceptional. I wasn't sure about a Pub serving Thai food and the menu is a little daunting on first inspection but I have to say it was probably one of the best meals we have experienced. 3 course meal for about £20. This was my first visit, it will not be my last!'

'OK I now understand what all the fuss is about with this pub. CAMRA Pub of the year etc. Visited for the first time last night and sampled the award winning cask ales. The Rudgate Battle Axe 4.2%, The Ludlow Black Knight 4.5%, The Holdens Special 5.1% and the Holdens Mild were all in great form! The place itself is a proper pub with wooden tables, chairs and benches a nice homely feel with friendly staff and regulars. I will have to make the effort soon to complete my tastings!'

'Visited again last weekend. Must say the meals have gone down market! Don't get me wrong they were very nice but very much pub grub now rather than the excellent quality they used to serve. Average cask ale, from memory I think it was a Slaters Brew.'

'It is such a shame about this pub. OK now they do a decent cask ale but the place is full of chav and chavettes climbing over the furniture on a Saturday evening - not a pleasant place to be. Stopped for 1 and left. Great location, shame about the standards!'

'Tried a pint of Websters Bitter that was on offer at £1.99 and found out why - obviously been on too long and was well past its best. The average age of the staff seems to be about 12 - also heard comments coming from the "Cellar" while coming from the toilets.. "no! don't do that.. you shouldn't shake the barrel to see how much is left cos all the crap from the bottom gets stirred up!"... good job one of the kids knows about beer... I didn't stay for another!'
