Hemingford Grey Pubs : The Cock Inn pub in Hemingford Grey near Huntingdon
'We came upon this pub by chance, towards the end of an 8-mile walk, and thought we might have a sandwich and a pint. Then we saw the interesting menu and decided to go for it. The standard of cooking was very good. True, the portions are not huge, but neither are the prices -- so we went for two courses and thought the value for money was excellent. Cleanliness was A-1 -- we were in the graden and the tables had been scrubbed, ashtrays all emptied, they even brought a bowl of water for our dog. The staff couldn't have been more helpful or attentive. It's not a traditional spit 'n' sawdust pub, and it doesn't pretend to be, but my pint had been well kept. Recommended.'

Dorrington Pubs : The Swan Inn pub in Dorrington near Shrewsbury
'Visited on 28 April 2006. Hadn't booked, but they fitted us in. Very friendly landlord and staff. Relaxed atmosphere, but decor a bit too pink for me! Good selection of beers and wines. Good menu, which they're willing to tweak on request. Generous portions of superbly prepared and presented food. This place is seriously good and the proprietors evidently take pride in their high standards, which is as it should be. Well worth the trip (to Frodesley, a few miles out of Shrewsbury).'

Hamble Pubs : Bugle Inn pub in Hamble near Southampton
'Yes, the menu is limited, but it all appears to be freshly prepared and it includes a veggie dish and a choice of fish. On our visit on 1 October 2006 we tried risotto, grilled snapper and steak burger and they were all excellent. My only criticism on the food would be that the chips are heavily pre-salted -- there's salt on the table, so why not leave it to the customer? Service was prompt and friendly. Restricted choice of ales, but my pint of Indian Summer came from a well-kept cellar. '

Froxfield Pubs : The Trooper Inn pub in Froxfield near Petersfield
'We've been to the Trooper several times in the last 4 years or so and it maintains a consistently high standard on all fronts: ambience, food and drink. We've never had a bad meal, a poor pint or a dodgy wine and often all 3 have been excellent. The service is friendly, the staff knowledgable and the menu always interesting. A good choice of ales and wines makes it well worth a visit.'

Colwall Pubs : The Wellington Inn pub in Colwall near Malvern
'We found this place quite by accident after working up a thirst and an appetite walking in the Malvern Hillsin May. It's an unpretentious pub that punches way above its weight. The landlord and staff are welcoming and pleasant. When we visited, there was a good choice of ales which the landlord was happy to expound upon. I chose Goffs Tournament, which was in very good shape. Good draught cider too, though I can't remember which it was. As a resident of the South East, I was amazed by the reasonable prices. These extended to the food. An imaginative but not over-the-top menu delivered the goods and was excellent value. I had fish and chips, definitely home made, with big chips almost like wedges. My missus wanted the vegetarian option (butternut squash risotto), but that was no longer available. However, the chef rustled up a really good pasta dish that had certainly never seen the inside of a freezer. I wish we'd had space for pud. If we lived in this area, we'd be back for more.'

Charlton Pubs : The Fox Goes Free pub in Charlton near Chichester
'My experience on a very busy Sunday lunchtime was happier than those of some reviewers on other sites, who claim to have encountered poor service. We hadn't booked, but were invited to use a table that had been booked for a late lunch so long as we were able to leave before the time it was booked for -- fair enough. When we ordered (at the bar -- this is a pub) we were told there was a wait of about 30 minutes for food. I paid when I ordered, but I could have run a tab. In the event, the food arrived after about 15 minutes and it was very good. The house bitter was good and if I hadn't been driving I'd have been tempted by a good range of other ales. They also do a mean draught cider (or so those who had some assure me). The accent at this place appears to be on quality and maybe the fact that it's very busy means it's a victim of its own success. It's not a traditional English boozer, but it's very good at what it does.'

Bursledon Pubs : The Jolly Sailor Inn pub in Bursledon near Southampton
'Very busy pub, with pleasant young staff who on our latest visit were struggling to cope with problems that were not of their making. There was only one person behind the bar (on a Sunday lunchtime!) and the queue stretched right across the pub. They ran out of all but one real ale. And the computer crashed (funny how pubs always used to function without a computer). We ordered drinks from our table and they took 25 minutes to arrive -- came after the food. The meals are not cheap, but on the whole they are well prepared -- though it's a shame they don't use proper risotto rice in the risotto. Best to sit outside if the weather's up to it. '

Buriton Pubs : The Five Bells pub in Buriton near Petersfield
'We visited on an unseasonably warm Saturday in February and sat in the garden -- a very pleasant spot, although some of the furniture could do with renewing. Inside, there's a good balance between the traditional local and a more contemporary feel -- although the sofa under the dartboard worried me! There's a restaurant-style menu and a bar menu and you can eat off either. The beer (Dorset ales) was good and the food was very good -- generous portions of tasty, well-prepared dishes with mussels featuring strongly. Not cheap, but you wouldn't expect cheap in this part of the world. Good staff too; they still seem to be settling in but they're certainly getting there. Well worth checking out. '

Walsingham Pubs : Black Lion Hotel pub in Walsingham
'What a great pub -- a really warm welcome, an even warmer fire and a nice pint. Eccentric locals. Shabby but comfortable interior. Just like pubs used to be -- long may it prosper. '

Burnham Thorpe Pubs : Lord Nelson pub in Burnham Thorpe near Kings Lynn
'Called in as we just happened to be passing one lunchtime and were very pleasantly surprised. Loads of character, good ales and remarkably good food -- a bit pricey for this part of the country, but freshly prepared and tasty, using (I would say) quality ingredients. Friendly landlord / bar staff too. '

Cley-Next-The-Sea Pubs : The George Hotel pub in Cley-Next-The-Sea near Holt
'This place hides behind a fairly unprepossessing exterior on a difficult corner location by a busy-ish road -- but don't be put off. There's parking to the rear of the hotel and truly excellent food may be had inside. When we visited (April 08) they were offering a set price 3-course menu for £9.95 a head, with 3 choices for each course. This was stupendous value. Dreading some horrible cheap grub, we were amazed to be served a well-prepared, intelligently devised meal we'd have been happy to pay 3 times the price for (and round our way, we'd have to). Local ales on tap too, served by pleasant bar staff. The interior furnishings are quite contemporary and some might find they jar with the traditional architecture that houses them, but we thought it worked well. Give this place a try and if you're disappointed then you're very hard to please. '
