This user has reviewed the following pubs:

Gateshead Pubs : Jolly Miller pub in Gateshead
'Has changed exponetially since being reopened 18 months ago. A fine selection of watery, "popular" lagers and traditional real ales. Good, friendly atmosphere. Expensive by Gateshead standards, but still reasonably priced (around £2.30 per pint). Recommended.'

Gateshead Pubs : Black Horse Inn pub in Gateshead
'Small pub with a minute bar area and a fairly spacious lounge. Opposite a chippy and next door to an Indian resteraunt, which is always a bonus. Beer is fairly cheap, especially during the week (between £1.80-£2.50 per pint, depending on the drink and the day), but the atmosphere can be a little unwelcoming to those outside the clique of locals who represent much of the business.'

Gateshead Pubs : Beaconsfield Hotel pub in Gateshead
'Very popular pub in the Low Fell area of Gateshead, but I personally fail to see the attraction. Interior decor and layout is fine, but at weekends this pub is packed to bursting, which is never comfortable. Pricey by Gateshead standards-anything up to 3 pounds a pint is possible with bottles and spirits sometimes more. Atmosphere can be good, but there are frequent "incidents" in and out, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights. Not for me.'

Gateshead Pubs : Gold Medal pub in Gateshead
'Two years ago this pub, which replaced the old "Porcupine Park" complex on the site, would have scored an excellent 9. Now it gets seven, simply due to the fact that the food is still good, the beer is still smashing and the atmosphere still friendly enough, but having successfully pinched enough customers from the other bars in the local, it has shunted its prices up accordingly. In Gateshead terms, this is a fairly expensive pub now. Recommended still, but by next year may not be. Car Parking available'

Gateshead Pubs : Queens Head pub in Gateshead
'Err...this pub might have been excellent, but it was knocked down and is now part of the car park to the new Hilton Hotel...'
Report

Gateshead Pubs : The Blue Bell Hotel pub in Gateshead
'This pub would, 12 months ago, have struggled to get a single mark. However, extensive renovation to it's interior makes it the stand out pub on Gateshead High Street (albeit this is like being the tallest dwarf in the world). Has been completely refurbished, sells a good, cheap pint and is in the middle of a pile of chippies and takeaways. Unfortunately, it is still let down by the sizable presence of the cretins who mostly frequent the immediate locale. Much improved.'

Gateshead Pubs : Old Brown Jug pub in Gateshead
'If you have wandered through the sahara for 5 years only to return home to find that the western world has destroyed itself in a nuclear war, the water cannot be drunk and tesco is fresh out of "value" bottle spring, then, and only then, should you go to the Brown Jug for a pint... If there is a worse pub this side of Kabul, I'll be very surprised.'
Report

Gateshead Pubs : The Crown pub in Gateshead
'Firstly, this pub is no longer "The Crown", it was renamed "Bar Mondo" some 5 years ago (!?!). As with all pubs of this type, it is a souless, dreary place; all wood and shiny aluminium decor. At the weekend, it is like a venue from David Finchers' "Fight Club", so frequent are the brawls involving the copious underage minions this venue attracts. It is only really saved by the fact that it's beer is not too bad, and that daytimes during the week you can get most pints for less than £1.60'

Gateshead Pubs : The Gardeners Arms pub in Gateshead
'OK, starting with the good. The beer is cheap (less that a couple of quid a pint normally), the bar and lounge are quite spacious, there is a cheap pool table and the staff are very canny. Unfortunately, this is all spoilt by the fact that the inside hasn't been decorated since roughly the same time as Bismarck's prussian presidency, and that it gets so full of drunks, smackheads and other assorted pondlife that sometimes this place resembles a warzone rather than a pub. However, it absolutely pales into comparison with the Old Brown Jug accross the road...'
Report

Gateshead Pubs : The Magpie pub in Gateshead
'The pub deserves credit for putting a photo on the site, because if I were the owner I would prefer to remain anonymous... Again, another cheap Gateshead wateringhole with the usually amenities (pool, dukebox, nearby chippy etc). If you are Ricky Hatton and you fancy a bit of light pre-fight training, this is the place. If not, don't bother.'

Gateshead Pubs : The Top Swan pub in Gateshead
'This pub tells a sorry story, and I actually feel upset telling it, as this is the pub in which I celebrated my 21st birthday. It used to be very cheap and cheerful, serving decent beer at decent prices and is blessed with one of the best decorated and laid out lounges you are likely to see. Unfortunately, the last manageress decided that it would be better for the pub if, rather than buying beer from a brewery and selling pints of it to thirsty locals, she instead bought cheap bottles and cans from the local off-licence and sold them to whoever and whatever stumbled through the door. No age or physical suitablity a hinderance. Not surprisingly, this pub is now boarded up and is likely to be for the considerable future.'

Gateshead Pubs : The Trafalgar pub in Gateshead
'This pub has an excellent central Gateshead location and is extremely well stocked with a variety of ales and beers. Even at the weekend it is reasonably priced (£2ish per pint) and is very popular with the over 55's who apply for a membership card and then get beer at a reduced rate. Unfortunately, the pub loses marks on the ground that the manager is a viscious, miserable, mistrustful, fat and ancient scumbag. And you can quote me on that.'
Report

Gateshead Pubs : The Victoria pub in Gateshead
'Very popular bar/resteraunt in the Low Fell area of Gateshead. Small bar area sells lagers to a distinct group of regulars and plays host to quiz nights, darts matches etc. Has an excellent Sunday football team. Staff are generally very friendly. Lounge is mainly a resteraunt selling good quality food at very reasonable prices, with offers at certain times on certain meals. Only let down by the manageress, who treats customers with distain and has a very high staff turnover as she tends to sack them on an arbritary basis.'

Gateshead Pubs : Three Tuns pub in Gateshead
'My local and regular, which means of course that I have a vested interest in this particular establishment. It has changed beyond recognition since it reopened in 2002, evolving from a typical geordie den of inequity (it was still my regular, though) into a real ale serving concert venue. The bar is small and is frequented by 30 or so regulars, while the back room is a pool room during the day, with a big screen for football and a jukebox as you would expect, but over the weekend it becomes a concert room, hosting live music of a punk-rock persuasion. Has become, then very popular, with weekends a sell out. Was voted Gateshead Pub of the Year in 2003. The staff are excellent throughout, and most of the clientelle create a very friendly atmosphere. However, despite this stunning transformation, it has started to attract one or two of the unsavoury elements that had initially left the vacinity. There are also more than a couple of people getting in who appear not to be of legal age. The bar is uninhabitable for 4 days at the end of the week if, like me, you just don't like rock music. And the beer is quite expensive now, anything up to £2.50 per pint at weekends, which is an increase of almost a quid a pint in the last 2 years. Recommended, so long as the price doesn't go up again...'

Newcastle Upon Tyne Pubs : Old George Inn pub in Newcastle Upon Tyne
'This is one of those small, compact, claustrophobic little pubs that I like so much. The beer is fairly inexpensive during the week, though it goes up over the weekend to near three and a half quid a pint. It is worth it. Excellent atmosphere and a cracking crowd singing along to recent "hits" and classics alike. Has a little paved outside are for those sweltering summer nights. Only problem? It is tucked away in a back lane halfway up the Bigg Market, meaning a daring run through the fighting and the vomiting is required to get their. Still highly reccommended'

Newcastle Upon Tyne Pubs : Ram Jam Inn pub in Newcastle Upon Tyne
'Back in the late 1990's, as I started my quest to be as drunk as possible as often as possible, I stumbled upon Ram Jam's, a small cellar bar in an offshoot lane at the top of the Bigg Market. It was cheap, cheerful, had a great atmosphere and quickly became my favourite Newcastle pub. As always happens in these circumstances, some muppet in an office somewhere decided that the best course of action would be to take this excellent little watering hole and incorporate it into a city-centre "megapub" with the pub that used to be upstairs-the vault. Thus Ram Jams is no more, having been replaced by "The Vault", another of those souless knacker infested scumholes that keep popping up in Newcastle City Centre. Bas***ds.'

Newcastle Upon Tyne Pubs : The George & Dragon pub in Newcastle Upon Tyne
'Formerly located on that affectionate part of Newcastle known as "hippy green", this was a quaint little pub jam packed with long haired, scruffy student sorts. Then the chavs (yes, we had 'em as long ago as 1996...) started going in and bashing the scruffy types up, and so the management got sick and left. The pub has been bricked up ever since.'
Report

Newcastle Upon Tyne Pubs : Lennons Disco Bar pub in Newcastle Upon Tyne
'One of those 60s/70s/80s bars that Newcastle does so well-great beer, relatively knacker-free and a cracking croud listening and dancing to cracking music. Recommended'
Report

Newcastle Upon Tyne Pubs : Empress Inn pub in Newcastle Upon Tyne
'Empress, in its previous form, no longer exists, though its structure and range of clientelle are almost identical. From the charming morons trying to sell you fake ecstacy to the charming morons trying to stab you in the head with a screwdriver, this is a real happening place where everyone should go. Sort of. Expensive, crap been and a health hazard in general-pointless really. If memory serves, this bar is now actually called Sugar.'
Report

Newcastle Upon Tyne Pubs : The Vaults pub in Newcastle Upon Tyne
'See "Ram Jams" above'
Report

Newcastle Upon Tyne Pubs : The Head Of Steam pub in Newcastle Upon Tyne
'Like the "George and Dragon" used to be, only bigger, minus the trouble element and with a selection of regular live music. Not really my scene now, but rated highly as all those I know whose scene this is rave about it. Constantly.'
Report

Cayton Pubs : Star Inn pub in Cayton near Scarborough
'Close your eyes all you fellow townies and imagine the stereotypical country pub, stuck in an outpost village of about 2 dozen inhabitants, selling cask ales and obscure local brands. If you have the image in your head, I promise it will extraordinarily close to the reality which is The Star in little Cayton village. A decetively large interior, albeit with a very low ceiling, is filled with locals of the most genial nature, drinking excellent quality beers at a respectable price. There is also a conservatory play area for kids, a beer garden and a fair sized car park. All of this is helped by an excellent, friendly bunch of staff. Located around three miles from the centre of Scarborough, this pub is very highly recommended.'
Report

High Felling Pubs : The Portland Arms pub in High Felling near Gateshead
'Fairly large local watering hole serving the usual concoction of fizzy largers and bottled feculance at cheap and cheerful prices. Deserves higher than 4/10 on the grounds that the atff and the manager are gernerall nice people, but the pub is let down, as most Gateshead pubs of this type are, by the fact that the regulars are generally scumbag knackers who take to those unfamiliar to them with all the charm of Ida Amin. '
Report

Wrekenton Pubs : Seven Stars Inn pub in Wrekenton near Gateshead
'By far the best of a very bad bunch of boozers in the area, the Seven Stars is fortuitously located just outside Wreckenton High Street and next to numerous food retailers (which always earns an additional mark or two). Children friendly in their spacious lounge with events and "fundays" on holidays and festive occassions (Halloween etc). Regulars are a largely decent bunch, enjoying predominetly mainstream largers and bitters at less than 2 quid a pint. The photo above, alas, is clearly not the Seven Stars, it is in fact The Magpie in Beacon Lough.'
Report

Gateshead Pubs : The Blue Bell Hotel pub in Gateshead
'Daveg is correct- my comments do indeed refer to the Blue Bell on Gateshead High Street. I may have been drunk when the original comment was posted...'
